At least 26 dead after the riots in Peru

The protests that are taking place throughout Peru after the coup attempt by former President Pedro Castillo on December 7 has so far left 26 dead, according to the latest balance of the Peruvian authorities.

A miner has lost his life in the Arequipa region, in the south of the country, due to clashes at the Ayacucho airport between protesters and security forces, all while protesters were trying to take over the terminal, reported ‘Daily Mail’.

The deceased person was urgently transferred with serious injuries to the EsSalud Hospital in Chala, although by then he arrived without vital signs.

At least six injuries have also been reported and it is presumed that the number of deaths could increase in the next few hours, according to the aforementioned newspaper.

In this way, the total balance of deaths in Peru has increased to 26, of which 17 have occurred after the emergency declaration decreed by the Peruvian Government last Thursday.

The Peruvian Government has decreed a state of emergency nationwide for a period of 30 days. Likewise, the Executive has declared an emergency in the National Road Network, allowing the Army to take to the streets in an effort to protect the country’s strategic points.
