Pemex moves fuel across Mexico through a long network of pipelines. This was a local accident, but it puts the safety of that network in the spotlight.

What Happened

The fire started after a fuel leak on a Pemex pipeline at kilometre 1 of the Tototlán–Ocotlán road. Jalisco’s state civil protection and fire unit, together with the Tototlán fire service, went to the scene, and Pemex staff were there as well.

Civil protection, the state agency for disasters and rescues, said its crews were supporting Pemex personnel in dealing with the leak. The road was closed while firefighters worked to keep the flames away from homes.

No evacuation has been reported. We have not seen an official statement on when the fire was brought under control.

The Injured

Preliminary counts say three people suffered severe burns. Two men, with burns over about 40% of the body, were taken by ambulance to a hospital in Guadalajara.

Local reports add that the third victim, a woman with very serious burns, went to a clinic in Ocotlán, a nearby town. Her condition has not been confirmed by a hospital, and we have no update on any of the three.

Why Pipelines Matter

Pemex runs a long network of pipelines that carries crude oil, fuels and gas between ports, refineries and cities. Tototlán and Ocotlán lie in a farming and manufacturing area of eastern Jalisco.

Our earlier report on Pemex losses from fuel theft shows other pressures on the company’s lines. Officials have not linked this fire to theft.

What It Means for You

For US investors, one local fire does not change Pemex’s finances, and no official has reported a supply disruption. Investors will watch whether Pemex explains the cause and the state of the line.

Travellers heading to Jalisco should follow the instructions of local civil protection, especially on roads near Tototlán and Ocotlán. Fuel leaks near a pipeline route are a reason to keep away and call emergency services.

What Is Not Known

Officials have not said which fuel was leaking, which pipeline was involved or what caused the leak. Early accounts differ on whether workers were handling the line when it ignited, and we could not confirm any of them.

We found no statement from Pemex, and some accounts call the injured workers without confirming their employer. The final number of injured and their condition may change as hospitals report.
