Argentina quietly made its residency clock much stricter. Under a 2025 decree, the two years of residence required for citizenship must now be uninterrupted — and a single trip abroad can break the count, while permanent residency itself lapses after a year away.

What the decree changed

The decree rewrote how time in the country is counted for both citizenship and permanent residency. For naturalisation, the two-year residence requirement must now be continuous, with a person treated as continuously resident only if they have not left Argentina during the period.

It also cut the point at which permanent residency is treated as abandoned, from 24 consecutive months abroad to 12. The two rules are separate, and they are easy to confuse.

The citizenship trap

The strict reading is that an international trip breaks the continuity needed for naturalisation, restarting the two-year count. In practice, what counts as a meaningful exit has been left to the authorities and the courts to interpret.

That makes travel the single biggest risk for anyone building time toward an Argentine passport. If citizenship is the goal, the safe assumption is that leaving resets the clock.

What it means if you hold residency

Holding permanent residency is a different matter, and a short trip does not endanger it. What does is a long absence, since twelve consecutive months outside Argentina can now be treated as abandonment.

Temporary residents renewing their status face the ordinary requirements rather than a no-exit test. The uninterrupted rule bites at the citizenship stage.

The process has moved

Citizenship applications were also shifted from the federal courts to the migration authority, and now run through an online system. That has made the process more administrative and, in principle, faster.

It also means the migration authority is the body assessing your residence record. Entry and exit stamps matter more than they used to.
