Aras Says Eduardo Bolsonaro’s Appointment as Ambassador Is Not Nepotism

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – “I can confidently say that the precedent that governs nepotism does not extend to political officials. In all states and municipalities, there are children and first and second-degree relatives holding positions in state secretariats or municipal secretariats, without this affecting any constitutional value.”

“Of course, this House is sovereign and will be in a position to decide what it considers on this issue and will deserve my respect,” he said.

Manifesto

When asked by Senator Fabiano Contarato, Aras admitted that he had signed a manifesto, without reading it in its entirety, of the Association of Evangelical Jurists that defended “Christian values” and the “gay cure” and did not acknowledge families made up of homo-affective relationships.

“I’ve been a police detective for 27 years, I’ve been a law professor for 20 years, I’m a Senator of the Republic. I am very proud of my family, I have a son. Don’t you recognize my family as a family? Do I have a subfamily? Because this letter says so, Mr. Prosecutor. And it says more: it establishes a gay cure. Am I sick, Mr. Prosecutor?”, asked Contarato.

Aras argued that the only caveat to the issue is that the Constitution disciplines this subject in a way that is not contemporary. “Our difficulty here is merely formal. In addition, my respects go to your family, to your children, who are as equal as mine. And I don’t even believe in gay healing either,” said the deputy prosecutor.

“I would feel much more comfortable for myself and for my friends who marry same-sex spouses, with legislation and a norm in which I do not read ‘man and woman’, but ‘person and citizen’,” added Aras.

Royalties

Another issue addressed by the nominee was the issue of the oil royalty law, with which Augusto Aras undertook to act with “due care and caution”.

In November, the Federal Supreme Court (STF) is expected to judge the suspension of provisions in the law that provide for new rules for distribution of oil royalties, the target of disputes between states and municipalities.

Appointment approved

The appointment of Antônio Augusto Brandão de Aras to the office of Federal Prosecutor General was approved by the full Senate yesterday, September 25th, by 68 votes in favor, 10 votes against and 1 abstention.

Aras will serve a two-year term as head of the Prosecutor’s Office, to which he may be reappointed once. He will replace Raquel Dodge, former prosecutor general, whose term expired on September 17th.
