Airtel Kenya 5G just got more room to grow: the mobile network bought 100 MHz of spectrum for 8.4 billion Kenyan shillings (about US$65 million). Its parent, Airtel Africa, disclosed the purchase on Friday 30 October 2026 in half-year results.
Spectrum is the radio space that carries mobile signals, and 5G needs a lot of it. For US readers, the deal shows a foreign operator committing long-term money to Kenya, where American phones, apps and cloud services are widely used.
What Airtel Kenya Bought
Airtel Kenya acquired 100 MHz of spectrum in the 3500 MHz band for 25 years. Airtel Africa said so in its results for the half year to 30 September 2026.
The Airtel Kenya 5G spectrum cost 8.4 billion Kenyan shillings (about US$65 million at 129.9 shillings to the dollar on 31 October 2026). The Communications Authority of Kenya, the state regulator that issues telecom licences, approved the purchase, subject to standard conditions.
Spectrum in Plain English
Spectrum is a slice of radio frequencies that a government licenses to a phone company, much like a lane on a highway. MHz, short for megahertz, measures how wide that lane is, and a wider lane carries more data at once.
A band of 100 MHz is a wide lane by mobile standards. It lets a network run faster 5G for many users in the same place without slowing down.
Why the 3500 MHz Band Matters
The 3500 MHz range, often called the C-band, is the main band on which 5G launched around the world. It balances speed and reach better than the very high bands, so phones keep a signal over a wider area.
The new block gives the network room to add more 5G customers. It can also sell home broadband delivered over the air, a market covered in our guide to phone and internet service in Kenya.

How It Compares With the 2022 Purchase
In July 2022 Airtel Kenya paid US$40 million for 60 MHz in the 2600 MHz band, on a 15-year licence. Airtel Africa announced that deal on Monday 25 July 2022.
The Airtel Kenya 5G block is 40 MHz wider and runs 10 years longer. Spread over its term, the price works out to about US$26,000 per MHz per year, against about US$44,000 for the 2022 block.
Airtel Africa Is Spending More Across the Continent
Airtel Africa runs mobile networks in 14 African countries and is listed in London and Lagos. It reported revenue of US$3.82 billion for the six months to 30 September 2026, up 28.2% on a year earlier.
Profit after tax rose to US$452 million from US$376 million, while capital spending on networks and equipment more than doubled to US$657 million. The group said its 5G network now covers 4,100 sites in seven markets, and a data centre in Kenya is under construction.
What It Means for US Readers
Investors who follow African telecoms can see Airtel Africa is spending ahead of demand in a big East African market. The company’s shares trade in London and Lagos, so US exposure usually comes through international funds.
Better Airtel Kenya 5G helps American firms that sell apps, payments and cloud services to Kenyan users. Travelers and remote workers also gain from stronger mobile data, though coverage still varies outside cities.
What Is Not Known
The company has not said when the 3500 MHz spectrum will be switched on, or which towns will be served first. It also gave no figure for how much of the US$657 million of group spending is planned for Kenya.
The regulator’s standard conditions have not been published in detail. Whether rival Safaricom, Kenya’s largest mobile operator, holds a similar block in the same band is not part of the company’s statement.
