South Africa’s fiercest football rivalry returns on Saturday with every ticket gone. Orlando Pirates host Kaizer Chiefs at FNB Stadium, the Johannesburg ground that staged the 2010 World Cup final.

Kickoff is 15:30 South African time, or 9:30 a.m. Eastern. Our Soweto derby hub follows the build-up to the match.

Key Facts

  • Match: Orlando Pirates host Kaizer Chiefs, two Soweto-born clubs, on Saturday, 31 October 2026.
  • Kickoff: 15:30 South African time (UTC+2), which is 9:30 a.m. Eastern and 6:30 a.m. Pacific.
  • Tickets: All 63,680 public tickets sold out in under six hours on 14 October.
  • Watch: SuperSport, a pay-TV sports channel, and SABC 1; no US broadcaster is confirmed.

A Sold-Out Derby With Form On Its Side

The Soweto derby is the biggest fixture in South African club football. It pits Pirates, the reigning league champions, against Chiefs, the other Soweto giant.

Pirates arrive as the form side, having won seven of their last eight games in all competitions. On Tuesday, 27 October they beat Milford FC 3-0 in the Carling Knockout Cup, a domestic cup.

Chiefs have had a harder season. A run of one win in eight games had put their coach, Fernando Da Cruz, under pressure before Tuesday.

That night Chiefs beat TS Galaxy 3-0 at FNB Stadium. Striker Wandile Duba scored all three goals.

Favourites, But No Guarantees

Pirates coach Abdeslam Ouaddou accepted that his side is the favourite. “We have to accept this position of favourites because we were champions,” he said, but he added that being favourite does not mean winning.

Derby results often ignore the table. A fixture this heated tends to turn on nerve more than on recent form.

Getting To The Stadium

Major General Fred Kekana of the South African Police Service urged fans to arrive early. Tickets will be scanned about 500 metres from the turnstiles to ease crowding.

Police have arranged transport with Rea Vaya, Johannesburg’s bus rapid transit system, as well as taxi associations, the Bolt and Uber ride-hailing apps and Gautrain, the rail and bus network. Gautrain buses run between Park Station and the stadium for ticket-plus-Gautrain-package holders only.

What It Means For You

For US readers, the match starts in the morning: 9:30 a.m. Eastern, 8:30 a.m. Central and 6:30 a.m. Pacific. US daylight time ends on Sunday, so the clocks still match this schedule.

Watching from the US will take some effort, because no American broadcaster is confirmed. SuperSport and SABC 1 carry the match in South Africa, and SABC also streams online.

What Is Not Known

Starting line-ups and final injury or suspension news have not been confirmed. The clubs usually name their teams shortly before kickoff.

No reliable forecast exists for the result. Pirates’ better form is a fact, but it is not a prediction.
