5G rapidly arriving in Chile: First antennas to be switched on within three weeks

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – It is possible that before Christmas, WOM, Entel, and Movistar will be ready to launch their 5G commercial offer in Chile. In this last month, the three operators that won the bidding are moving forward with installing the first phase of radio bases, which will allow them to turn on the antennas and provide fifth-generation (5G) technology.

So far, the companies have sent 377 requests to the Undersecretary of Telecommunications (Subtel). But the sector authority projected that by March 2022, this figure would rise to 1,685, which is equivalent to 69% of the towers committed in the first 12 months of the companies’ concession projects.

“Between now and December 15, we will be able at Subtel to pinpoint an exact date for the start of service. We know that users are waiting for this technology and that the telecommunications companies will make commercial plans available to citizens as we conclude the different stages within this first phase of reception of works,” said Undersecretary Francisco Moreno.

After receiving the concession decrees in October, operators had one month to comply with the three stages of their projects: reception of works, antenna assembly, and service debut.

For this reason, in the last few weeks, the authority and its team have been in the field verifying the technical compliance of the constructions to double the number of antennas turned on by the end of the year.
