Unusual Snow and Storms Hit Chile’s Driest Desert, Disrupting Daily Life and Business

Chile’s Atacama Desert, one of the driest places on Earth, saw rare snow and storms this week.

Chile’s disaster response agency, Senapred, and the national weather service reported that snow, heavy rain, and strong winds hit the northern regions of Tarapacá, Antofagasta, and Atacama. Usually, these areas see almost no rain, even in winter.

This week, weather alerts warned people to stay safe. Winds in the Andes mountains reached up to 100 kilometers per hour. The snow and wind made it hard to see, especially on mountain roads and near mining sites. Authorities asked people to avoid risky areas.

Emergency teams rescued 25 people stuck in their cars at a border crossing with Argentina after snow blocked the road. In the village of Huatacondo, heavy rain caused a flash flood that damaged homes and cut off roads. Schools in several towns closed because of the bad weather.

The ALMA Observatory, which studies space from high in the desert, shared photos of its antennas covered in snow. Staff at the observatory said they had not seen snow like this in over ten years.
