U.S. Proposal to Control Gaza Faces Global Rejection

President Donald Trump unveiled a controversial proposal on February 4, 2025, during a press conference with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

The plan calls for the U.S. to assume control of Gaza, rebuild its infrastructure, and relocate the territory’s 2.1 million Palestinian residents. While framed as a long-term economic revival strategy, the proposal ignited immediate condemnation.

It drew criticism from global allies, adversaries, and human rights groups. Trump’s vision centers on transforming Gaza into a U.S.-managed “Riviera of the Middle East” within 10–15 years.

Over 92% of homes lie destroyed, and 85% of remaining residents live in makeshift shelters. The territory’s density—5,500 people per km²—exceeds Hong Kong’s, straining scarce resources.

Aid groups report 600,000 lack clean water, while Israel’s blockade restricts basic supplies like tents and fuel. Legal experts warn the plan breaches the Fourth Geneva Convention, which prohibits forced displacement under occupation.

UN officials likened it to ethnic cleansing, citing Gaza’s protected status. Hamas dismissed the proposal as a “reward for genocide,” vowing continued resistance.

U.S. lawmakers, including Senator Chris Murphy, accused Trump of prioritizing political spectacle over stability, noting Gaza’s reconstruction requires 60,000 trailers and 200,000 tents—not luxury resorts.

The backlash highlights fading U.S. diplomatic leverage. Saudi Arabia reiterated that normalization with Israel hinges on Palestinian statehood, while regional allies fear refugee influxes could destabilize economies.

Investors eyeing Middle East projects now face heightened uncertainty, as Trump’s plan clashes with grassroots realities. For policymakers and global markets, the proposal underscores the risks of unilateral geopolitics.
