The Fall of Peru’s “Divine Messenger”: Andrés Hurtado’s Corruption Scandal

Andrés Avelino Hurtado Grados, known as “Chibolín,” built a TV persona around spectacle and salvation.

He has described himself as a messenger of God. He has also claimed contact with extraterrestrials. He often hinted at a political future on air.

On October 2, 2024, a Peruvian court ordered 18 months of preventive detention for Hurtado.

Prosecutors are investigating him for alleged influence peddling and bribery-related conduct.

The case also involves a senior anti-money-laundering prosecutor, Elizabeth Peralta, and businessman Augusto Javier Miu Lei. They faced restrictions rather than jail at that stage.

Hurtado’s biography is part of his brand, and some details come from his own telling. He has spoken about growing up with limited means.

He later moved into entertainment and became a recognizable television host. His Saturday program mixed celebrity access with public charity segments.

That charity image now sits at the center of the allegations. Prosecutors say Hurtado helped “manage” the return of seized gold for Miu Lei.

Reporting tied to the case describes five gold bars weighing close to 40 kilograms. Investigators also cite an alleged $1 million payment linked to the effort. Those claims remain allegations and have not been proven in court.

A second line of suspicion involves Peru’s immigration system. Investigators have examined claims that Hurtado used contacts to accelerate paperwork for certain clients.

In that context, police seized a BMW connected to a chain of transfers involving people linked to the same circle. Authorities are treating the vehicle as potential evidence, not as proof of guilt.

The fallout has spread beyond the courtroom. Peru’s volunteer firefighters revoked an honorary recognition linked to Hurtado. The Peruvian Army also announced it annulled a medal it had awarded him years earlier.

The case is widening because it touches state institutions and social power. It raises questions about access, favors, and how influence is traded.
