Key Facts

  • —The country Sierra Leone: 8.8 million people in 2025 and an economy of about US$7.5 billion, on the Atlantic coast of West Africa.
  • —Land neighbours Guinea to the north and east and Liberia to the south-east; the Atlantic Ocean closes the rest.
  • —The big neighbour Guinea has 15.1 million people and an economy of US$28.3 billion, almost four times the size of Sierra Leone’s.
  • —Regional clubs ECOWAS, the West African bloc, and the four-nation Mano River Union, whose secretariat sits in Freetown.
  • —Border row On 19 July 2026 ECOWAS leaders urged Guinea to pull its troops fully out of Yenga, on the Sierra Leone frontier.
  • —Leadership Sierra Leone’s President Julius Maada Bio chaired ECOWAS until 19 July 2026 and hosted its summit near Freetown.

Sierra Leone neighbours only two countries by land, Guinea and Liberia, yet both shape its trade, its borders and its security. As of 29 October 2026, this guide explains who they are, where they disagree and why it matters to a US reader.

Sierra Leone and Its Neighbours in Plain English

Sierra Leone is a country of about 8.8 million people on the Atlantic coast of West Africa, with its capital in Freetown. It has only two land neighbours, so every border matters.

Guinea lies to the north and east, and Liberia lies to the south-east. The Atlantic Ocean closes the map to the west and south.

  • Sierra Leone: led by President Julius Maada Bio, with an economy of about US$7.5 billion in 2025.
  • Guinea: the larger neighbour, led by President Mamadi Doumbouya, who won an election on 28 December 2025.
  • Liberia: the smaller neighbour, with 5.7 million people, led by President Joseph Boakai.
  • ECOWAS: the Economic Community of West African States, a regional bloc founded in 1975 with its headquarters in Abuja, Nigeria.
  • Mano River Union: a four-nation club of Sierra Leone, Liberia, Guinea and Côte d’Ivoire, with its secretariat in Freetown.
  • Yenga: a border enclave on the Sierra Leone and Guinea frontier where Guinean troops are stationed.

Where Sierra Leone Sits on the Map

Sierra Leone covers about 72,300 square kilometres on the Atlantic coast, with its capital and main port in Freetown. Our Africa hub collects the guides to the countries next door.

The Mano River runs along the frontier with Liberia. The Mano River Union says its four member countries share borders, history, traditions and similar peoples.

That is why Sierra Leone neighbours such as Guinea and Liberia matter to investors, and why border security does too. Our guide to the iron ore bust shows how quickly mining income can vanish.

Guinea, the Big Neighbour to the North

Guinea had 15.1 million people and an economy of US$28.3 billion in 2025, according to the World Bank. Sierra Leone had 8.8 million people and US$7.5 billion, so Guinea’s economy is almost four times larger.

Guinea is led by General Mamadi Doumbouya, who won the presidential election of 28 December 2025. ECOWAS leaders congratulated him on 19 July 2026 and noted that Guinea also held parliamentary elections on 31 May 2026.

The Mano River Union praised Guinea on 2 October 2026 for strengthening border security and building shared infrastructure. Its message called Guinea a pillar member of the union.

On Thursday 22 October 2026 ECOWAS opened a national platform in Conakry, Guinea’s capital, to support cross-border community projects. In its first phase, Sierra Leone and 11 other member states each received a US$100,000 grant.

Yenga, the Border Row Still Open

Yenga is a border enclave on the Sierra Leone and Guinea frontier where Guinean troops are stationed. Lofa, on the Liberia and Guinea frontier, is a second enclave with the same problem.

ECOWAS issued its final communique on 19 July 2026 and praised Sierra Leone and Guinea for partly reopening the Yenga border. It urged Guinea to withdraw its troops fully from Yenga and Lofa, in line with a tripartite communique of 16 March 2026.

The leaders told the ECOWAS Commission to speed up a technical study of both friction points and to propose a settlement. They also asked it to work with the Mano River Union, the African Union and the UN regional office for West Africa.

At a Mano River Union security meeting in Freetown, Sierra Leone’s internal affairs minister called for Yenga to be demilitarised. Guinea’s delegate answered that patient technical dialogue is the best way to settle border matters.

Liberia, the Neighbour Across the Mano River

Liberia had 5.7 million people and an economy of US$5.2 billion in 2025, according to the World Bank. Sierra Leone’s economy is about 1.4 times larger.

Boakai travelled to Bo, in southern Sierra Leone, on Sunday 18 October 2026 as guest of honour at a church anniversary. He called regional borders linking points, and Sierra Leone’s trade minister spoke of an enduring brotherhood between the two countries.

Their histories are tied together, because wars in both countries from 1991 to 2003 halted the work of the Mano River Union. Our guide to Liberia and its neighbours tells the same story from Monrovia’s side.

The Mano River Union and a Shared Past

The Mano River Union was created in October 1973 by Sierra Leone’s President Siaka Stevens and Liberia’s President William Tolbert. It is named after the river that runs along the border between the two countries.

Guinea joined in 1980 and Côte d’Ivoire in 2008. The wars of 1991 to 2003 left the union weak, and the leaders restarted it in 2004.

On its 53rd anniversary, 3 October 2026, the union’s secretary-general, Ambassador Simeon Moribah, named money as the biggest problem. He said late payments from member states limit its ability to keep experts and run country offices.

Disease crossed the same borders. The World Health Organization says the Ebola epidemic began in Guinea.

By July 2014 it had reached the capitals of all three countries. More than 28,600 people were infected and 11,325 died before the outbreak was declared over in June 2016.

On 10 and 11 July 2026 security officials of all four members met in Freetown. They agreed a joint plan with a shared intelligence hub.

The joint border units, which have run on thin budgets since 2017, are to resume regular operations. Shared health checks at the borders matter for the same reason.

Trade, Power Lines and Border Posts

In 2018, the latest year on record, Sierra Leone sold only about US$9.2 million to Guinea and US$2.3 million to Liberia. Its total exports were US$205 million.

Imports tell a similar story, with about US$29.6 million from Guinea and US$2.9 million from Liberia, out of US$987 million in total.TRANSCO CLSG runs a power line linking Côte d’Ivoire, Liberia, Sierra Leone and Guinea. On Monday 5 October 2026 its general manager led a delegation to Guinea to discuss the line’s land corridor and title deeds. At Baidu, in Kailahun District in eastern Sierra Leone, the Mano River Union invited bids to rehabilitate a customs border post.

The work belongs to a road and transport programme financed by the African Development Fund.Bids for the Baidu work were due on 26 June 2026.The post is meant to ease trade and improve conditions for border staff.Sierra Leone’s own business bets look outward to the sea, as our report on its national shipping company shows.

The fourth Mano River Union member, Côte d’Ivoire, is covered in our guide to the Ivory Coast and its neighbours.

ECOWAS, Where Sierra Leone Led in 2026

ECOWAS was founded in 1975 and has its headquarters in Abuja. Sierra Leone’s President Julius Maada Bio chaired its summit of leaders, called the Authority, until 19 July 2026.

On Saturday 18 July 2026 Bio opened a conference centre bearing his name and an ECOWAS logistics depot at Lungi, near Freetown. The depot is meant to speed up peace missions, aid deliveries and counter-terrorism operations.

The next day, Sunday 19 July, the leaders held the bloc’s 69th session there. They elected Senegal’s President Bassirou Diomaye Faye chair for one year.

A Sierra Leonean, Francess Piagie Alghali, now serves as ECOWAS commissioner for political affairs, peace and security. The leaders also endorsed Sierra Leone’s candidate for judge at the International Court of Justice for 2027 to 2036.

The summit welcomed an easing of tension between Bio’s government and the opposition All People’s Congress, ahead of the 2028 elections. It also said talks with the Alliance of Sahel States, a group of Burkina Faso, Mali and Niger, must proceed as one block.

Senegal now holds the chair, as our guide to Senegal’s geopolitics explains. The hand-over leaves Sierra Leone with a seat at the table but no longer in the chair.

What It Means for US Readers

Sierra Leone and its neighbours sit in a region where border posts and power lines decide how fast goods move. Calm borders at Yenga and Lofa lower the risk for the shippers and investors that work there.

Health is the second link. Ebola crossed these borders in 2014, so shared health checks matter to travellers and airlines far beyond West Africa.

Americans planning a trip should check the State Department’s current travel advice for Sierra Leone, Guinea and Liberia before booking. Land crossings between them can change quickly, as the partly reopened Yenga border shows.

Investors weighing Sierra Leone neighbours as a market can start with our Sierra Leone explainer for the national economy. They should also follow ECOWAS and Mano River Union meetings, because border decisions there shape trade.

What Is Not Known

As of October 2026, it is not known when Guinean troops will leave Yenga and Lofa. The study that ECOWAS ordered has no published end date.

Nor is it known when the Mano River Union will win the stable funding it has asked for. Its secretary-general says late payments from member states remain the biggest problem.
