São Paulo Reopens Offices and Car Dealerships Today

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – The Mayor of São Paulo, Bruno Covas, announced the in-person operation of offices and car dealerships in the city as of this Friday, June 5th. According to Covas, the two sectors signed a protocol with the city government on Thursday, June 4th, containing the guidelines for the establishment’s partial operation.

According to the protocol, in-person office hours will be limited to four hours a day – outside the city’s rush hours – with 1.5-meter spacing between employees, encouraging home office, particularly for mothers of young children, and the commitment that companies will avoid risk group employees working in-person.

Masks for employees and customers, temperature control, and Covid-19 testing on employees with symptoms are also mandatory. Additionally, companies must provide hand sanitizer, water, soap, and disposable tissues.

The protocol also determines that places serving the public should have only 20 percent of their maximum capacity and improve the sanitation of air conditioning systems.

Bruno Covas said that public transportation, which today operate with a reduced fleet (2,400 buses), will be reinforced once the two sectors are opened.

“Concessionaires will offer an additional 2,000 buses that will start running according to demand in order to avoid overcrowding. Today we are working with a reduced fleet, but we now have 2,000 buses that will be available in several terminals in the city,” the Mayor said at a press conference.

The city of São Paulo relaxed its quarantine last Saturday, May 30th, allowing part of the city’s sectors to operate in person again as long as they comply with a protocol passed by the city government. The office and dealership sectors are the first two to benefit.
