São Paulo Records 66 Percent Drop in Daily Hospitalization Requests

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – The city of São Paulo recorded a 66 percent drop in the number of daily hospital admission requests over the past week. Ten days ago, the capital had an average of with 350 daily requests from Covid-19 patients. Currently, the mark has dropped to an average of only 120 requests.

In an interview to Rádio Bandeirantes, the municipal Secretary of Health, Edson Aparecido, points out that this criterion is more important than the current occupancy rate.

The request for admission is a former criterion, which allows understanding what may happen with the rates in ICUs and wards. However, the data behavior must be monitored over the next few days so that a conclusion can be drawn.

“We have greatly increased the monitoring of people with symptoms in the city. We are not allowing patients to worsen, we are transferring them if necessary. This is reducing the number of hospitalizations requested. If this behavior remains for a ten-day period, then we have a very important number,” the Secretary said.

New ventilators

Along with this factor, 273 new ventilators have been installed in hospitals since last Friday, May 29th. On Monday, June 1st, another 107 will be installed in the city’s medical centers.

Most will be allocated to the south side. There are 90 for the Parelheiros Hospital, ten for the Red Cross and five for Jabaquara. The two remaining ventilators will be installed in the Dr. Benedicto Montenegro hospital, in the city’s eastern zone.

In the private network, the occupancy rate in the capital stands at 86 percent, representing a decrease of nine percentage points compared to 95 percent in the first half of May.

So far, the city hall has hired 248 ICU beds in 19 private hospitals, almost half the number that had been estimated for early June.

However, according to Secretary Edson Aparecido, the arrival of the new ventilators and the maintenance of the rate below 80 percent reduce the immediate need for this alternative.
