São Paulo — Sun and cool air settle over the city for a classic winter Saturday.

Later, Avenida Paulista turns into a vast, open-air gallery as cars give way to bikes and feet.

Friday’s market session saw a mixed board, with the Ibovespa edging higher and the COP sliding sharply against the dollar, per the WEEK IN FIGURES board.

Today is for slow street food, a long coffee in a sunny square, and an art show that closes this month.

São Paulo, daily life and what's on.

What to See & Do
SATURDAY IN SÃO PAULO

TODAY’S PICK — STREET ART & OPEN SKY

Walk the new Paulista under a bright winter sun

Avenida Paulista is a classic winter stroll today; tomorrow (Sunday, August 2) it closes fully to cars from 10am to 6pm for the weekly Paulista Aberta (Open Streets) programme, when the entire stretch from MASP to Praça Oswaldo Cruz goes car-free.

Start at the MASP vão-livre around 10am. A free exhibition, “Damián Ortega: matéria e energia”, runs at MASP through 13 September, free every Tuesday, taking everyday objects apart and reassembling them into striking installations.

Walk west with a fresh-pressed caldo de cana from a street stall. Musicians and capoeira circles pop up every few hundred metres.

At Parque Trianon, slip into the shaded trails. It is the city’s best ten-minute forest bath, right in the middle of the avenue.

Finish at the Japan House around 5pm. The current exhibition on contemporary Japanese design closes 9 August. Entry is free. The café downstairs does a quiet matcha latte.

OUTDOORS — TWO WHEELS EAST

Cycle the Ciclovia do Rio Pinheiros

Rent a bike from the Itaú bike-share at Villa-Lobos Park and join the newly extended riverbank path. The 21.5 km route along the Pinheiros edge is flat, wide and surprisingly green.

Stop at the Praça Pôr do Sol viewing deck around 4pm. The late-afternoon light over the river bend is a quiet surprise in the west zone.

COFFEE & WHERE TO WORK — PINHEIROS & JARDINS

Weekend tables with strong Wi‑Fi

For a serious work session, Coffee Lab on Rua Fradique Coutinho opens at 8am on Saturdays. Their cold brew is top-shelf and the back-garden tables have reliable Wi‑Fi.

In Jardins, Sofá Café on Rua Oscar Freire offers a quieter upstairs room with power outlets. It fills by 11am, so an early arrival buys you the best spot.

THE CONTRASTING PLAY — QUIET COLLECTIONS

A slow afternoon at the Pinacoteca

Cross the city to Luz and step into the Pinacoteca. The permanent collection of Brazilian modernists occupies the sunlit ground floor, and the sculpture garden café is an oasis of calm.

A special temporary show on Tarsila do Amaral’s later works closes 30 August. Entry is R$30, with a half-price Saturday rate for residents.

TONIGHT, AFTER 7 PM

Bar counters and a late jazz set

Begin with a gin and tonic at Guilhotina Bar in Pinheiros. Their rooftop opens at 6pm, and the sunset over the neighbourhood roofscape is a local ritual.

From there, walk to JazzB on Rua Mourato Coelho. A sextet plays hard-bop from 9pm. The cover is R$40.

For a later drink, the speakeasy-style Bar dos Arcos in the basement of Theatro Municipal stays open until 1am. Cocktails run R$60–80.

Dinner-wise, Tan Tan Noodle Bar in Pinheiros serves steaming bowls until midnight. The pork-belly ramen with a soft egg is the dish for a cool August night.

ALSO ON TODAY

Exhibition: “Arte e Resistência” — Memorial da Resistência, Luz — 10am–6pm, free, a powerful look at São Paulo’s political history through art.

Feira do MASP — Below MASP, Av. Paulista — 10am–5pm, free, antique fair with a great selection of vintage records and Brazilian modern furniture.

Sesc Avenida Paulista: Rooftop Cinema — Sesc Avenida Paulista — 7pm, R$12, screening a 1970s Cinema Novo classic with English subtitles.

Workshop: Portuguese for Expats — Weekend Intensive — Casa do Caminho, Vila Mariana — 9am–1pm, R$180 for the day, a focused workshop on ordering, directions and social talk.

Feira de Orgânicos do Parque da Água Branca — Água Branca — 7am–1pm, free entry, the city’s best organic produce and a superb pastel tent.

04
Getting Around
TRANSPORT

No rodízio applies today or tomorrow; all plates circulate freely across the expanded centre. Metrô and CPTM run their Saturday timetables with reduced headways, so budget an extra five minutes between trains.

Line 4-Amarela connects Luz to Vila Sônia and serves Paulista and Pinheiros efficiently. A single trip costs R$5.20; use a contactless card or the TOP app.

05
Where to Eat
LUNCH & DINNER

Lunch: Hit the ground-floor market at Mercado de Pinheiros. A classic mortadella sandwich at Bar do Mané runs R$55 and feeds two. For a lighter plate, the ceviche at Comedoria Gonzalo costs around R$45.

Dinner: Book a table at Mocotó in Vila Medeiros, a journey worth the Uber for the torresmo and dadinhos de tapioca (plates R$50–90). Closer in, Casa do Porco offers its roasts in a lively, standing-room ground-floor bar setting at similar prices.

06
Practical Info
GOOD TO KNOW

Carry a light jacket for the evening chill and a refillable water bottle. Most cafés and Sesc outlets have free filtered water stations.

Pix is now the default payment for everything from street stalls to high-end bars. Keep a small amount of cash (R$50) for the antique fair, where some vendors are card-averse.

Avenida Paulista is safe during the day with a heavy police and CET presence during Open Streets. Stick to the main avenue and well-lit side streets after dark.

07
Community & Lifestyle
FOR NEWCOMERS

The São Paulo Expats & Digital Nomads WhatsApp group meets this afternoon at 3pm at PikurruchA’s in Vila Madalena for an informal English-Portuguese language exchange. New arrivals are genuinely welcome.

The NomadX SP Telegram channel reports a Sunday morning running club along the Minhocão elevated park, departing at 8am from Praça Marechal Deodoro.

08
Game Day
THE WEEKEND ROUND

No Brasileirão fixtures land on Saturday. The main action comes Sunday: Corinthians host Grêmio at Neo Química Arena at 4pm BRT, and São Paulo FC are away to Fluminense at the Maracanã at 6:30pm BRT.

Watch the Sunday matches at O Pasquim Bar in Pinheiros, which shows every game with sound on a large projection screen. Arrive 40 minutes before kickoff to claim a table.

For a bigger-party atmosphere, Blue Pub on Rua Mourato Coelho carries multiple screens and does a solid half-price caipirinha for the pre-game crowd.

09
Business & Markets
WEEK IN FIGURES

Friday’s market session closed with the Ibovespa up and the S&P 500 higher on the day, as shown on the WEEK IN FIGURES board. The Colombian peso was the notable mover, falling sharply against the US dollar in a volatile session.

The broader story for an expat professional is the steady improvement in Brazil’s inflation expectations across recent Central Bank Focus reports. Analysts have trimmed 2026 IPCA projections for four straight weeks, edging closer to the 5.1% region.

Combined with a stable-to-softer USD/BRL and a globally risk-on Friday on Wall Street, the mood among local analysts is cautiously constructive heading into the new month. Watch for any August corporate earnings surprises from the big retailers and banks next week.

FAQ
QUICK ANSWERS

Does the São Paulo rodízio apply today?

No. The municipal vehicle restriction (rodízio) runs only Monday through Friday. On Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays it is suspended.

You can drive any car with any plate ending anywhere in the city centre today. The normal schedule resumes Monday with plates ending 1 and 2 restricted during the morning and late-afternoon peaks.

Can I use my foreign card on the Metrô?

Yes, at most major stations. Contactless international Visa and Mastercard cards are now accepted directly at the turnstiles on new readers, particularly on Line 4-Amarela and the busier Line 1-Azul stops.

For older lines, it is safer to buy a single-trip ticket (Bilhete Unitário) at the counter using cash or a card with a PIN. A single journey costs R$5.20.

Is it safe to walk on Avenida Paulista on a Saturday?

During the Open Streets hours (10am to 6pm), Avenida Paulista is one of the safest open stretches in the city. Families, cyclists and street performers fill the avenue, and police presence is heavy.

After dark, stick to the MASP side and the busy stretch near Rua Augusta. Avoid deserted side streets late alone, a sensible rule for any large city.
