Santos Holds Vila Nova to 1-1 Draw, Maintains Série B Lead

Santos and Vila Nova tied 1-1 at Estádio Onésio Brasileiro Alvarenga in Goiânia during the 16th round of Série B.

Furch scored for Santos, while Jemmes equalized for Vila Nova. Santos had a numerical advantage after Henrique Almeida’s expulsion in the 30th minute of the second half.

Despite the draw, Santos leads the competition with 29 points, just one point ahead of Vila Nova.

Santos will keep the top spot this round unless América-MG wins against Amazonas on Saturday, which would tie the points.

Santos’ next match is on Monday against Coritiba in the 17th round at Vila Belmiro, starting at 20:00 (Brasília time). Vila Nova will visit Ponte Preta on Tuesday at 21:30.

The first half started slowly in Goiânia. Santos aimed to control possession and limit Vila Nova’s opportunities, gradually leading to attacking positions.

The first real chance came at 10 minutes when Otero’s corner found Furch, who headed just over the bar. Shortly after, Escobar’s cross from the left reached Serginho, who missed the shot.

At 22 minutes, Furch’s header following a cross was blocked by Quintero. Santos players appealed for a handball, prompting a four-minute VAR review, which resulted in no penalty.

Vila Nova’s best first-half chance came at 40 minutes when Elias’s cross was nearly deflected into the net by João Schmidt, but Gabriel Brazão made a crucial save.

After halftime, Vila Nova tried to apply pressure, but Santos scored first. At nine minutes, Guilherme’s cross deflected off Serginho, and Furch headed in the goal. Santos almost doubled their lead, but Dênis Júnior saved Otero’s shot.

Vila Nova equalized at 19 minutes when Jemmes headed in a corner kick, leaving Brazão no chance to save.

Vila Nova continued to press forward. At 31 minutes, Henrique Almeida’s attempt to chip over Gil was blocked by the goalkeeper.

Almeida received his second yellow card for the foul, leaving Vila Nova with ten players.

With the numerical advantage, Santos controlled possession and almost scored a second goal at 45 minutes.

João Schmidt unleashed a powerful shot from outside the box that narrowly missed the target, and Dênis Júnior saved Guilherme’s long-range effort, securing the 1-1 draw.
