Have the Paço Imperial almost to yourself on a Monday

Mondays in Rio are museum-closure day for many heavyweights, but the Paço Imperial in Centro stays open from noon to 6 pm — free entry — and sees almost nobody through its doors. You walk the colonial stone corridors and current contemporary exhibitions in genuine silence, a rare luxury in this city.

The current show, closing August 16, surveys the late work of Brazilian modernist Ione Saldanha — her painted bamboos and geometric canvases play beautifully against the roughened 18th-century walls. Take the VLT to Praça XV station; the building is directly on the square.

Afterwards, walk three minutes to the CCBB on Rua Primeiro de Março, which is closed on Mondays but whose ground-floor Colombo Café outpost keeps serving until 7 pm. A pastel de nata and an espresso here runs about R$16, and the belle-époque room is fully open for seating.

A single block further, the Casa França-Brasil is also shut, but the newly pedestrianised Rua do Mercado has a half-dozen informal tables where office workers linger over an after-work chope. By 4 pm the light turns golden against the old alfândega buildings — a Centro afternoon for the solo explorer.

Enter Praça XV on foot or by VLT within a one-block walk. From Zona Sul, Metrô Line 1 to Carioca then a 12-minute walk or a quick VLT connection puts you at the door. No tickets, no queues — just an identity card or driver’s licence for the bag check.

Cycle the Lagoa loop before the Thursday rain arrives

The Lagoa Rodrigo de Freitas delivers Mondays the way locals guard them: the 7.5-km path is quiet by 10 am, the water flat, and the rental bikes from Pedal do Lagoa (near Parque dos Patins) are R$20 an hour with no weekend surcharge today.

Ride the whole loop counter-clockwise — you catch the Cristo view early, then Corcovado over your left shoulder the rest of the way. Stop at the Palaphita Kitch quiosque at the halfway mark for a R$14 água de coco and a chair facing the water with no minimum spend before 4 pm.

If you are working remotely, the Loop Café inside the Parque dos Patins has reliable Wi-Fi and outdoor tables — grab a R$12 cold brew and log on from the edge of the lagoon. The ciclovia is open, uncongested, and the week’s best weather is right now.

Two quiet Monday workspaces with strong Wi-Fi

Botafogo’s Slow Bakery on Rua São João Batista opens at 8 am and stays quiet until the lunch rush — their long communal table, plentiful power points, and no-laptop-restriction policy make it a solid four-hour workstation. A filtered coffee and the pão de queijo de frigideira will set you back about R$24.

In Leblon, the Coffee Five inside Shopping Leblon’s ground floor is a Monday sleeper: the shopping-centre co-working tables near the café have free Wi-Fi, air-con, and nobody hurries you along. The espresso is R$9 and the mall security means you can leave a bag at the table for a bathroom break without worry.

For proper coworking, the Tropix space in Ipanema (Rua Visconde de Pirajá, 572) has a R$99 day pass and its rooftop terrace is nearly empty on a Monday. Book ahead on their site — the phone signal on the roof terrace is patchy but the Wi-Fi is fibre.

A bohemian afternoon with panoramic city views

While Centro stays flat and institutional, Santa Teresa offers windy cobblestone lanes and a different altitude entirely. Take the bonde from the Carioca station (R$20 return, every 20 minutes until 4 pm) and ride it to the Largo dos Guimarães — the tram itself is half the afternoon.

The Parque das Ruínas, open until 6 pm with free entry, runs a quiet gallery space and its viewing platform frames the Baía de Guanabara with the MAC building in the foreground. Bring a book and sit on the concrete steps up top; there is no café inside, but the Bar do Gomes on the Largo serves a R$15 chope and a decent bolinho de bacalhau.

Walk back down the hill via the Selarón Steps — it is a ten-minute descent to Lapa, fully safe in daylight, and the tiles catch the 4 pm sun. At the bottom, a R$10 caldo de feijão from the Amarelinho da Glória sets you up before the evening commute home.

Maracanã match night, Centro samba, and a jazz bar in Lapa

Tonight belongs to Flamengo at Maracanã — kick-off 8 pm BRT — and even if you do not have a ticket (from R$80, check flamengo.com.br), the bars around the stadium and in the Zona Sul fill up by 7 pm. In Ipanema, the Boteco Belmonte on Rua Teixeira de Melo reliably shows the game across multiple screens and the crowd sings along.

For a football-free Monday night, the Rio Scenarium in Lapa opens its three floors at 7 pm (R$40 entry) with a samba roda that starts quietly and builds through the night. Tables book out for dinner by 8 pm, but the upstairs balconies accept walk-ins at the bar.

Over in Botafogo, the jazz-focussed Blue Note Rio inside the Novotel is running its Monday jam session — entry R$35, music from 8 pm, and the room is air-conditioned and civilised. A R$42 G&T and the house pianist doing Tom Jobim is a very good Monday night for the non-football crowd.

If you are near the Maracanã zone, skip the stadium bars and walk to Aldeia Maracanã on Rua Visconde de Niterói — a boteco with large outdoor tables, solid pasteis, and enough screens that the game follows you wherever you sit. Arrive by 7 pm to grab a pavement table.

You can, but do not. Matchday queues at the physical bilheteria on Rua Professor Eurico Rabelo can stretch for an hour after 6 pm, and the safest tickets are digital — download the Flamengo Ingressos app and buy an e-ticket before 4 pm. You will need a CPF or foreign passport number.

If the app blocks your international card, try using a Brazilian-denominated Pix payment through a local bank account or a trusted friend. General admission (setor norte) starts around R$80; avoid anyone offering a ‘VIP lounge’ pass on the pedestrian bridge as these are often fakes.

Dress in plain clothes — no visiting-team colours if you are sitting in the Flamengo end — and take only a phone, a copy of your passport photo, and a credit card. The stadium has a strict no-bag policy for large backpacks, and the less you carry, the faster you get through the revista.

Go early and take a table on the first floor to watch the band warm up — it is the best solo evening in the city that does not require a football ticket or a dinner companion.
