Key Facts

  • —The country Brazil, Latin America’s largest country, investigates air accidents through Cenipa, a centre tied to its Air Force which investigates to prevent crashes rather than to assign blame.
  • —Why it matters The Bell 430 that crashed with country singer Rick Sollo was a private helicopter from a US maker, and the report shows how little recording equipment such flights had to carry.
  • —Why now The 16-page preliminary report was attached to the case file on 21 October 2026 and became public on Thursday 22 October, a month after the crash on Monday 21 September.
  • —What happened The cockpit voice recorder held only old maintenance conversations, not the flight, and the helicopter had a history of faults in both electrical generators.
  • —The numbers Five people died, the recorder could store 30 minutes and dated from 2002, and the helicopter struck a slope at 1,686 metres (about 5,531 feet) in cloud.
  • —What it means for you Visitors who charter private helicopters in Brazil should know that no flight recorder was required on this type of flight, and that mountain cloud and thunderstorms were forecast that day.
  • —Still open The cause is unknown, because Cenipa says no hypothesis is ruled out and its final report has not been published.
  • —Power Index Brazil ranks 1st of 14 in The Rio Times Latin America Power Index, with 75.0 points (October 2026 edition).

The Rick crash report from Brazil’s air accident investigators found that the helicopter’s cockpit voice recorder captured no audio of the final flight, a month after the crash that killed the country singer Rick Sollo and four others. The investigation centre Cenipa also recorded recurring faults in both electrical generators of the aircraft, but it has not named a cause.

The aircraft was a twin-engine Bell 430, a model of the US manufacturer Bell, and ND Mais described the voice recorder as a Honeywell unit, so the findings concern US-made equipment that flies in many countries. Brazilian rules did not require any flight recorder for this type of private operation, according to G1 and ND Mais, which read the report.

We covered the disappearance and the discovery of the wreckage in Rick of Rick & Renner Dies in Brazil Helicopter Crash. Rick Sollo was one half of Rick & Renner, a Brazilian country duo, and the helicopter was carrying five people when it went down in the highlands of Santa Catarina state.

What the Rick Crash Report Says

The 16-page preliminary report was attached to the investigation file on 21 October 2026 and describes the current state of the inquiry. Cenipa wrote that its content may still change and does not necessarily bind the conclusions of the final report, and that no hypothesis for the accident has been ruled out, G1 said.

Cenipa classifies the event as a collision of a controlled aircraft with terrain, known in aviation as CFIT, according to O Globo and ND Mais. That label describes the type of accident, not the reason for it.

The helicopter, registered PP-MGR and owned by JTA Empreendimentos e Urbanismo, hit the north slope of Morro Convento dos Padres at 1,686 metres (about 5,531 feet), close to the 1,790-metre (5,873-foot) summit, ND Mais said. The site lies in São Joaquim National Park near the town of Urubici, in the Serra Catarinense highlands of southern Brazil.

Cenipa’s work aims only at preventing future accidents, while the Santa Catarina Civil Police handle any criminal question, G1 explained. The state Scientific Police hold the phones, a camera and tablets found at the site, O Globo said.

A Voice Recorder Without the Final Flight

Investigators extracted the cockpit voice recorder at the Cenipa laboratory, but the audio on it came from a maintenance job on an undated occasion, not from the flight of 21 September. The unit could store 30 minutes and had been installed in the helicopter on 17 May 2002, G1 and ND Mais said.

The manual called for a function test before the first flight of each day, but that test was not on the checklist found with the aircraft, O Globo said. The report does not say that this omission caused the missing recording.

Investigators are still trying to pull data from other electronics, including instrument displays, GPS units and engine control units, O Globo said. They are also looking for records from a navigation app the pilot may have used, and the engines were removed for examination.

Generators That Kept Failing

The generators supply the aircraft’s electrical power and, on most models, start the engine, G1 explained. A mechanic told investigators that they failed intermittently even after repairs.

A starter-generator was replaced with a leased unit on 25 April 2026, and the repaired unit went back in on 13 May. After that, faults appeared in both generators in turn, and at one point a generator stopped supplying power while the other kept the screens alive, G1 said.

The mechanic recommended that the helicopter return to a maintenance organisation for a new inspection, but that had not happened by the day of the crash. Some faults occurred in flight through cloud or rain, though the mechanic could not say whether moisture was the cause, according to G1 and O Globo.

The report also mentions unintended autopilot disconnections that the pilots handled by keeping control of the helicopter, and ND Mais said a servo actuator in the pitch control line was replaced in March. O Globo said the report does not link these earlier events to the crash.

On 30 March 2026 the helicopter made an unscheduled landing at Ibiaçá in Rio Grande do Sul after an abnormal vibration. Work on the main rotor dampers cleared the problem, and a vibration analysis in August 2026 was within the manufacturer’s limits, O Globo said.

Weather in the Serra Catarinense

A cold front was crossing southern Brazil with showers, low cloud and thunderstorms, G1 said. The Curitiba aviation forecast valid from 12:00 to 18:00 UTC warned of moderate rain cutting visibility to 3,000 metres (about 1.9 miles), embedded thunderstorms, cloud tops above 10,000 feet and mountain obscuration over the Serra Geral.

A camera at the Morro da Igreja air control detachment, about 8 kilometres (5 miles) from the site, showed ridges covered in cloud, ND Mais said. A resident’s 18-second video shows the helicopter flying into thick cloud, and a home security camera recorded the engine sound rising and then stopping abruptly at 11:32:37 a.m. Brasília time.

The crew delayed departure because of rain at Criciúma, refuelled at Porto Belo and dropped that stop to fly straight to the highlands, ND Mais said. O Globo said they checked weather apps and held a video call with a passenger waiting at São Joaquim.

How the Flight Unfolded

The Bell 430 took off at 10:49 a.m. Brasília time from the Costa Esmeralda aerodrome in Porto Belo, on Santa Catarina’s northern coast, ND Mais said. The plan included business and leisure stops.

It contacted Florianópolis approach control at about 11:05 a.m., and ND Mais said radar data show it climbed to as much as 5,400 feet. O Globo said the emergency transmitter was found armed but the rescue service detected no distress signal.

The Crew and the Operator

ND Mais, citing the report, said the pilot held an airline-transport helicopter licence with an instrument rating and more than 11,300 helicopter flight hours. He had worked for the operator since August 2026 without a formal employment record.

The co-pilot held a commercial licence without an instrument rating and had 137 total flight hours, and he was hired for that day because the operator’s regular co-pilot was unavailable, ND Mais said. These are facts in a preliminary document, and none of the sources reviewed shows that Cenipa links them to the crash.

What the Owner Says

JTA, which owns the helicopter, said the preliminary report draws no conclusion on the cause and that Cenipa has not linked the crash to bad weather or to mechanical faults. It said the aircraft’s maintenance records were up to date, its airworthiness certificate was valid and it is cooperating fully with the authorities.

What It Means for You

For US readers who charter helicopters in Brazil, the Rick crash report is a reminder to ask operators about maintenance records, weather limits and crew experience. It also shows that a recorder was not required on this flight, so investigators may have to rebuild events from radar, video and wreckage.

Our guides Brazil Security and Crime Explained 2026 and Who Dominates Brazil, Elites and Regions Explained give wider background on the country. Visitors heading to the southern highlands can also read our Florianópolis City Guide for Expats and Visitors.

What Is Not Known

Cenipa has not said what caused the crash, and the electrical faults, the weather, crew decisions or another factor all remain open. The final report will be published on the Cenipa website after technical and laboratory analysis ends, ND Mais said.

We could not open the 16-page report itself, so every detail in this Rick crash report story rests on the three Brazilian outlets that read it and on the quoted passages. Those outlets call 21 October a Tuesday although it was a Wednesday, so we give only the date of the filing.

How much weight each factor carries is unknown. It is also unknown whether data from the GPS units, the engine control units and the phones will change the picture.

Frequently Asked Questions

What did the Rick crash report find?

It found that the cockpit voice recorder held no audio of the final flight and that the helicopter had recurring generator faults. Cenipa also recorded cloud, rain and thunderstorms in the forecast for the route.

Why was there no audio from the flight?

The recorder contained only conversations from an undated maintenance job, and the report does not say why the flight was not recorded. A daily function test of the unit was not on the checklist found with the aircraft.

Did Cenipa say what caused the crash?

No, and it says no hypothesis has been ruled out. The report is preliminary and may change before the final report.

Who owns the helicopter and what does the owner say?

The helicopter belongs to JTA Empreendimentos e Urbanismo. The company says the report states no cause, that its maintenance records were current and that its airworthiness certificate was valid.

Why does this matter to US readers?

The helicopter was a Bell 430 from a US maker, and the case shows that a recorder was not required on this type of private flight. It is also a reminder to check weather limits and maintenance before chartering a helicopter in Brazil.
