This guide explains what the league is, why a Puerto Rico basketball team changes towns and what is still unsettled. Our companion piece on what happens next for fans in Fajardo looks at the season ahead.

What the BSN Decided on 30 October

The league said its board approved moving the Osos de Manatí to Fajardo, where the team will operate as the Cariduros de Fajardo. It called the vote part of the board’s review of which franchises make up the league.

The BSN said it will keep working with the team’s management on the transition and that further details will be announced in due course. The announcement said nothing about an arena, a start date for the next season or a change of owner.

What the BSN Is and Why It Matters

The BSN is Puerto Rico’s top men’s pro league, and its website lists 12 teams, each tied to a town such as Ponce or Caguas. Local pride is a large part of the draw.

Puerto Rico also fields its own national team in international events. For a US reader, the BSN is a window into the island’s sport, since Puerto Ricans are US citizens.

Moving a Puerto Rico basketball team is therefore a civic matter, not only a business decision. A town that loses its team loses game-night crowds, local sponsors and a source of pride.

Why a Puerto Rico Basketball Team Moves to Fajardo

Félix Rivera, operations manager of the team, said the Osos struggled to draw crowds in Manatí after losing seasons in 2025 and 2026. He said the move to Fajardo was backed by an offer from the city.

Fajardo’s mayor, José Aníbal Meléndez, said the city is negotiating financial support for the team and is glad to see the Cariduros return. Manatí’s mayor, José Sánchez, said in a public statement that Fajardo’s offer was well above what his town could responsibly pay.

Town money is a recurring part of these deals. In 2023 the western town of Aguada promised over US$1.3 million in arena repairs and US$150,000 a year to its team.

Who the Cariduros and the Osos Are

The Osos de Manatí have played in the BSN under their current name since 2023. They are owned by Juan Carlos Ozuna Rosado, the Puerto Rican reggaeton star known as Ozuna, who team officials say will stay in charge.

Cariduros is the name of a Fajardo club that last played in the league in 2023. That franchise then went back to Aguada, its original home, and returned to the BSN there as the Santeros.

With the revival, Fajardo gets a team name its fans already know. Manatí loses its place in the league.

How the League Handles Team Moves

A move needs the approval of the league’s governing board, and the board does not always say yes. On 25 September 2026 a request to move the Indios de Mayagüez to Isabela failed to win the required two-thirds of the franchise owners present.

The Osos move shows that a request can pass when the owners agree. The league’s statement gave no vote count for 30 October.

What It Means for US Readers

Puerto Ricans are US citizens, so a BSN move is a US story as well as a local one. Fajardo is also a well-known gateway for travelers heading to the islands of Culebra and Vieques.

Visitors who want to see a game will have to wait for the league to name a home arena and a schedule. Until then, the main effects are local: sponsors, jobs on game nights and the town budget.

What Is Not Known

The league has not said which arena the Cariduros will use or when the next season starts. It has not published a roster, a coach or a ticket plan for the team.

Team officials have said they aim to play in Fajardo in 2027, but no schedule is public. Whether the owner will keep the team or sell it, and how much Fajardo will pay, has not been settled.
