President of Chamber Accuses Justice Minister of Trying to Halt Democratic Institutions

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – The president of the Chamber of Deputies, Rodrigo Maia, said that the Minister of Justice, Sérgio Moro, poses a threat to institutions and also that he would be a defendant if the “ten measures against corruption,” which validate the use of ill-founded evidence, had been approved by Congress, as Lava Jato wished.

In an interview with Ranier Bragon and Guilherme Mazieiro, Maia staged his toughest attack on Moro. According to him, Moro has as a “permanent strategy” the attempt to attack the democratic institutions of the country.

He also talked about imprisonment after a conviction has been confirmed by an appellate court. “The project that was presented by the government has good things. Now, I believe that the discussion of imprisonment… He, who is a lawyer, who knows the subject, to submit a bill seems more like a desire to wear out the Parliament than a desire to approve the bill”.

Maia also said Moro started his campaign with a distorted view of what Congress was all about. “He thought he could set the date for the vote on the bill and how the bill would proceed,” he said. “What I hope is that Parliament’s legitimacy will be respected, things that in the past were not respected by the group around Minister Moro, particularly the prosecutors. In those Ten Measures, we rejected the illegal evidence of good faith. Today they criticize the unlawful evidence of good faith in the case of The Intercept. You see how double standards are applied, if we had done what they would have liked, today they would be defendants, they would not be prosecutors and he [Moro] would not be Minister of Justice”.
