Petrobras announced 11 new pre-salt platforms by 2027
Petrobras announced 11 new platforms in Brazil’s pre-salt oil layer by 2027. This will boost oil production in coming years.
The company aims to raise its daily output from 2.06 million to 2.4 million barrels by 2027. The total output could reach 3.6 million barrels per day with partner fields.
The first new platform, FPSO Sepetiba, will start this year. It will be in the Mero field and can produce 180,000 barrels per day.
This makes it the third platform in Mero. Two more units will join by 2025.
The Búzios field currently has five platforms. Six new ones will join by 2027.

FPSO Maria Quitéria will also start in the Jubarte field by 2025. It will have a 100,000-barrel daily output.
The Albacora field will get a new FPSO in 2027. This platform can produce up to 120,000 barrels per day.
Pre-salt accounts for 78% of Petrobras’ total oil output. The first pre-salt oil was extracted in 2008.
It now makes up more than one-third of all oil production in Latin America.
Since 2008, pre-salt production has surged. The key drivers are the Tupi, Búzios, and Mero fields. As of 2023, pre-salt has yielded 5.5 billion barrels of oil.
Petrobras CEO, Jean Paul Prates, says this is an “unmatched success story.”
Over 15 years, pre-salt has brought in US$63 billion in royalties. Total government revenue from pre-salt is US$126 billion.
Major Player
Petrobras is a major player in Brazil’s energy sector. Founded in 1953, the company has seen many ups and downs.
The discovery of pre-salt layers in 2006 was a turning point. These layers are deep beneath the ocean floor.
Extracting oil from them is both risky and expensive.
Yet, the gamble paid off for Petrobras. Pre-salt fields like Tupi, Búzios, and Mero have high-quality oil.
They are now the company’s main income sources. The technology for deep-sea drilling has also improved.
This makes extraction more efficient and less risky.
