In the first half of 2024, Peru experienced a 2.49% increase in its national production.
June alone contributed a 0.21% rise, as reported by the National Institute of Statistics and Informatics (INEI) on Thursday.
The report noted that despite overall positive results, June’s performance faced slight setbacks.
This decrease was due to having one less business day because of a national holiday on June 7, unlike in 2023.
June’s notable growth stemmed chiefly from the fishing sector, which soared by 56.77%.
This surge was largely driven by a 74.85% increase in the harvesting of marine species for indirect human consumption. Moreover, the sector saw a 17.02% rise in direct human consumption.
Conversely, freshwater fishing declined by 21.02%, attributed to a drop in the extraction of species for fresh consumption and processed goods.
The sectors of transportation, storage, and messaging also saw significant gains, advancing 5.55%.
Within these, transportation subsectors grew by 5.39%, and storage and messaging improved by 6.07%.
Growth was evident in other areas as well. Accommodation and restaurants improved by 4.66%.
Government services rose by 3.93%, while telecommunications and other information services increased by 3.21%.
Similarly, business services grew by 3.21%, commerce by 2.28%, and electricity, gas, and water by 0.11%.
However, not all sectors fared well in June. Mining and hydrocarbons fell by 7.47%. Construction decreased by 2.40%, and agriculture and livestock dropped by 1.62%.
This data not only reflects Peru’s economic diversity and resilience but also underscores the impact of small changes like holidays on economic activity.
The robust performance in various sectors underscores potential for future stability and growth in the Peruvian economy.
