Peru emerged as the world’s top exporter of grapes with increasing volume
Peru emerged as the world’s top exporter of grapes by volume, shipping 71.4 million boxes weighing 8.2 kilograms each during the 2022-2023 season.
Despite social crises and the “El Niño Costero” phenomenon, the country witnessed a 10% growth compared to the previous season, as reported by the Peruvian Association of Agricultural Producers (AGAP).
The grape-growing area expanded by 5% to 11,174 hectares, and the total export value reached $1.499 billion, with major destinations being the United States (46%), the Netherlands (13%), and China (8%).
Peru has already claimed the title of leading grape exporter by value since 2021, according to the Association of Exporters (ADEX).

Overcoming challenges, such as social conflicts and adverse environmental conditions, has been possible due to increased cultivation areas and infrastructure development.
The coastal location of production areas facilitates transportation and proximity to ports, contributing to the success.
Collaboration with the National Agricultural Health Service (Senasa) has also opened new markets, with Japan showing potential as a future destination.
White seedless grapes saw the most significant increase in shipments (29%), primarily from Ica and Piura regions, exported to the United States, China, the Netherlands, and Mexico.
Red seedless grapes experienced a modest increase (3%), led by Piura. Sociedad Agrícola Rapel, Ecosac Agrícola, and El Pedregal were prominent exporters during the season.
Looking ahead, preventive measures like alternative transport routes and river draining are crucial to mitigate the potential impact of the El Niño phenomenon on future grape production.
