Peru Announces 60-Day Water Emergency in 544 Districts

Peru declared a 60-day emergency in 544 districts in anticipation of a water crisis from an expected El Niño event between 2023 and 2024.

A decree was issued, paving the way for immediate, risk-reducing measures.

The districts in question span 14 departments. These include Ancash, Apurimac, and Arequipa.

Local governments will work with the National Institute of Civil Defense (Indeci) in these areas. Together, they will roll out specific solutions based on real-time needs.

Indeci released a technical report on September 13th. This report maps the current water conditions.

It also predicts the effect of the upcoming El Niño in the Pacific. Based on these findings, the report identifies 544 districts as highly vulnerable to severe water scarcity.

Hence, national action has become necessary. Peruvian President Dina Boluarte and other top officials approved the decree.
