Oppo, a major player in the smartphone industry, has taken significant steps to broaden its business horizons. The company has entered into a strategic partnership with BYD, a leading electric vehicle manufacturer in China.

This collaboration aims to blend Oppo’s smartphone technology with BYD’s smart car systems, enhancing connectivity between mobile devices and vehicles.

The initial focus of this partnership is on integrating Oppo’s Android smartphones with BYD’s electric vehicles. Together, they plan to develop technologies that allow Oppo phones to unlock and control BYD cars.

The first product of this collaboration is the “Phone-Car Connectivity” system. This system will be available through an over-the-air update for BYD’s DENZA Z9 GT model and Oppo’s Find X8 smartphone series.

It offers features like app mirroring, privacy modes, voice commands, and seamless navigation transfers. In addition to this partnership, Oppo is acquiring AIWaves, an artificial intelligence start-up founded in March 2023.

AIWaves has developed a large language model called “Weaver,” which supports generative AI services similar to ChatGPT.

This acquisition will enable Oppo to integrate generative AI functions into its devices, making AI accessible to its 50 million smartphone users by year-end.

Oppo’s Strategic Expansion

Oppo plans to roll out these AI capabilities across its product range, from budget phones to high-end models. One of AIWaves’ notable products is Wawa Writing (Frog Writing in English), which assists in creating marketing content and fiction.

It can generate 100,000 Chinese words in just 10 minutes. Ranked as the fourth largest smartphone vendor globally, Oppo trails behind Samsung Electronics, Apple, and Xiaomi.

These strategic moves with BYD and AIWaves highlight Oppo’s ambition to lead in tech innovation by merging mobile and automotive technologies.

This approach not only diversifies Oppo’s offerings but also aligns with industry trends towards integrated digital ecosystems.

By expanding into smart automotive technology and enhancing its AI capabilities, Oppo aims to strengthen its market position and drive future growth. These initiatives reflect the company’s commitment to innovation and its vision for a connected future.
