Oil Prices Slip as Market Digests Trade Talks and OPEC+ Output
Oil prices eased in the last 24 hours as traders weighed the outcome of US-China trade negotiations and the impact of rising OPEC+ supply.
Official data shows Brent crude futures fell 0.36% to $66.63 per barrel, while West Texas Intermediate (WTI) dropped 0.32% to $64.77 in early Wednesday trading.
The latest market moves come after a period of heightened volatility, with prices having reached their highest levels since late April earlier this week. US and Chinese officials announced a framework to restore a trade ceasefire and address restrictions on rare earth exports.
US Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick confirmed the agreement, but President Trump has yet to approve the deal. Market participants remain cautious, as the agreement could stabilize demand but lacks final confirmation.
OPEC+ has committed to raising output by 411,000 barrels per day in July, continuing a gradual unwind of earlier production cuts. Saudi Energy Minister Abdulaziz bin Salman stated that OPEC+ aims to balance market stability with geopolitical risks.

This supply increase, combined with weak Chinese demand, has capped recent price gains. Chinese oil imports in May fell by 3% compared to April, with oil product imports down nearly 13%.
These figures highlight ongoing concerns about the strength of Asia’s largest oil consumer. Meanwhile, the US Energy Information Administration reported a 4.3 million barrel drawdown in US crude inventories for the week ending May 30, reflecting stronger-than-expected industrial demand.
Technical Indicators Signal Consolidation Phase
Technical analysis of both WTI and Brent charts reveals a market at a crossroads. On the 4-hour charts, both benchmarks remain above their 50-period simple moving averages, which act as dynamic support.
The Relative Strength Index (RSI) has moved out of overbought territory and shows renewed momentum, suggesting some upside potential remains.
Bollinger Bands indicate that prices have pulled back from upper volatility bands, signaling a pause after the recent rally. On the daily charts, both Brent and WTI trade near key resistance levels.
For Brent, the $65.45–$66.36 area remains pivotal, with a clear breakout needed to sustain further gains. For WTI, $62.85–$64.00 provides immediate support, while resistance near $63.57–$64.00 could limit upward moves.
The Moving Average Convergence Divergence (MACD) on both contracts shows a flattening trend, hinting at potential consolidation. Trading volumes remain robust, but no significant ETF inflows or outflows have been reported overnight.
The market’s direction now hinges on confirmation of the US-China deal, OPEC+ production discipline, and further data on demand from China and the US. In summary, the oil market faces a delicate balance.
Rising OPEC+ supply and weaker Chinese demand weigh on prices, while technical signals suggest the recent rally may pause unless new bullish catalysts emerge. Traders continue to monitor official developments and key support levels as the next decisive move awaits.
