Oil Markets Surge as Geopolitical Risk Drives WTI and Brent to Multi-Month Highs
Oil markets surged over the past 24 hours, with WTI and Brent prices reaching their highest levels in months. This sharp rally followed escalating geopolitical tensions in the Middle East and a significant drop in US crude inventories.
Official market data and technical indicators confirm the scale and drivers of this move. WTI crude futures for July opened at $69.43 and closed at $69.57, gaining 11% after a volatile session. Brent crude for August settled at $73.01, up 11.3%.
Both benchmarks saw their largest daily gains since early 2025, with WTI briefly touching $68.99 and Brent peaking near $74.94. Trading volumes spiked, with WTI front-month contracts recording 27,520 trades, a notable increase from the 65-day average.
The primary catalyst for this surge was the intensifying conflict between Israel and Iran. Reports of Israeli strikes on Iranian targets and threats of retaliation from Tehran raised fears of supply disruptions.
The possibility of Iran targeting the Strait of Hormuz, a vital oil transit route, added to market anxiety. The US evacuated some personnel from the region, underlining the seriousness of the situation.

Macroeconomic factors reinforced the bullish tone. US inflation cooled to 2.4%, raising expectations for a Federal Reserve rate cut by September. Lower rates typically support commodity prices by weakening the dollar and boosting demand.
The latest EIA report showed US crude inventories fell by 3.6 million barrels, double market expectations, tightening supply further. Technical analysis of the daily WTI chart reveals a decisive breakout.
Prices closed well above the 50, 100, and 200-day simple moving averages, confirming a strong uptrend. The Relative Strength Index (RSI) surged to 74.21, signaling overbought conditions.
The Moving Average Convergence Divergence (MACD) indicator showed a wide bullish gap, with the histogram expanding sharply. Bollinger Bands widened, and the price closed above the upper band, indicating heightened volatility and strong momentum.
On the four-hour chart, WTI maintained its uptrend but began to consolidate after reaching resistance near $70. The RSI reached 82.43, an extreme reading that often precedes a short-term pullback.
MACD momentum remained positive but showed early signs of peaking. Brent followed a similar pattern, breaking above key resistance and holding within a bullish channel.
Analysts noted that a test of support near $67.65 could precede another push higher if tensions persist. In summary, oil markets responded to real and immediate geopolitical threats with a risk premium reflected in prices and volumes.
Technical indicators confirm the rally’s strength but also highlight the risk of a near-term correction. Market participants will closely watch headlines from the Middle East and US inventory data for the next move.
