Moraes Orders Ankle Monitoring for Next Conservative Politician After Bolsonaro

Brazil has entered a tense chapter. Conservative Senator Marcos do Val landed in Brazil after a trip to the United States and was immediately ordered to wear an electronic ankle monitor.

This move came from Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes, who is known for his left-leaning, activist profile and for leading court actions against allies of former President Jair Bolsonaro.

Around 34 of Brazil’s 81 senators have pushed for Moraes’s impeachment, but it would take 54 votes to remove him from the court. The Supreme Court and its defenders say they are protecting democratic values and the legal system in a period of intense political risk.
