The Mexican peso posted its strongest performance of the year against the U.S. dollar on June 11, 2025, closing at 18.9127 per dollar, according to official Dow Jones and European Central Bank data.

This marks a 0.78% appreciation for the peso in one day, its largest single-session gain since early June, and the lowest closing rate since August 2024.

The peso’s rally extended a multi-session decline in USD/MXN, with the dollar falling in five of the last six trading days. Market participants observed the peso’s climb as the dollar lost ground across global currency markets.

The U.S. dollar’s weakness followed softer-than-expected U.S. inflation data, which tempered expectations for further Federal Reserve tightening and encouraged flows into higher-yielding emerging market currencies.

The peso, supported by a still-wide interest rate differential, attracted buyers seeking yield in a low-volatility environment.

The peso’s move also reflected Mexico’s improving macroeconomic backdrop. Recent industrial production figures exceeded forecasts, and sentiment around Mexico’s trade position remained constructive.

USD/MXN Breaks Below Key Support Amid Peso Strength

The peso’s resilience stood out, especially as negotiations continued between U.S. and Mexican officials over steel tariffs, with traders watching for a resolution that could further boost cross-border commerce.

Technical analysis of the daily USD/MXN chart reveals a decisive break below the psychological 19.00 level, with the pair closing well under all major moving averages.

The 50, 100, and 200-day simple moving averages now sit well above spot, confirming a persistent downtrend. The Relative Strength Index (RSI) on the daily chart closed at 30.48, signaling the market’s approach to oversold territory.

The Moving Average Convergence Divergence (MACD) indicator remains negative, with the histogram showing continued bearish momentum. Bollinger Bands expanded as volatility increased, and the price closed at the lower band, underscoring the strength of the move.

The four-hour chart reinforces the bearish picture. USD/MXN failed to regain the 19.00 level, and all short-term moving averages point downward. The RSI dipped below 30, confirming short-term oversold conditions, while the MACD stayed negative with no sign of a reversal.

The technical setup suggests the peso’s advance may pause for consolidation, but no evidence of a sustained rebound has emerged. Volumes surged as the pair broke key support, with traders citing increased activity from both local and foreign accounts.

Official sources did not report significant ETF inflows or outflows, but the peso’s outperformance relative to other emerging market currencies drew attention from market participants focused on yield and stability.

In summary, the peso’s rally on June 11 resulted from a combination of softer U.S. inflation, supportive Mexican fundamentals, and clear technical breakdowns in USD/MXN.

The market’s focus now shifts to upcoming U.S. data and the outcome of trade negotiations, as traders assess whether the peso can extend its gains or if a technical correction is due.
