The Colombian peso closed at 4,190.80 per U.S. dollar on June 11, 2025, recovering some ground after a sharp decline the previous day.

This movement followed the government’s decision to suspend its fiscal rule, a step confirmed by official sources, which sparked immediate market reaction and heightened volatility.

The peso had dropped by about 1.45% on June 10, hitting a four-week low before stabilizing during the following session. The fiscal rule, established in 2011, aims to limit government spending and borrowing to ensure long-term financial stability.

The Higher Council for Fiscal Policy (CONFIS) authorized the suspension, citing deteriorating public finances. This move is expected to push the fiscal deficit above the government’s previous 5.1% target, with new financing goals to be announced soon.

The finance ministry scheduled a press briefing for Friday to clarify the medium-term fiscal framework and outline how it intends to address the growing deficit.

Fundamentally, Colombia’s macroeconomic outlook remains challenged. The country faces a rising debt burden, with the public debt-to-GDP ratio exceeding the 55% cap set by the fiscal rule.

The fiscal deficit is projected to reach 6.8% of GDP in 2024, nearly double the previous year’s level. The peso’s recent performance reflects these concerns, with analysts warning that the market may not have fully priced in the fiscal deterioration.

Sovereign dollar bond spreads could widen further as investors reassess risk. Technical analysis of the USD/COP chart shows the peso consolidating after a volatile session.

On the 4-hour chart, the currency bounced from support near 4,150 and now faces resistance at 4,220. The 200-period moving average sits above the current price, signaling a bearish longer-term trend.

The Relative Strength Index (RSI) on both the 4-hour and daily charts remains below overbought levels, suggesting no immediate reversal but highlighting persistent selling pressure.

The Moving Average Convergence Divergence (MACD) indicator shows a recent bullish crossover, indicating short-term momentum may favor the peso, though the broader trend remains fragile.

Volume analysis reveals increased trading activity during the sell-off, confirming institutional involvement as investors responded to fiscal developments.

No official data on ETF flows is available for the session, but the heightened volatility suggests portfolio adjustments by both local and foreign participants.

The peso’s near-term direction depends on the government’s fiscal communication and the market’s assessment of Colombia’s ability to manage its debt load. The technical setup points to continued volatility, with support at 4,150 and resistance at 4,220 marking key levels to watch.

The fiscal rule suspension and rising debt concerns remain at the center of the market’s attention, leaving the peso vulnerable to further swings as new information emerges.
