Mexican Peso Rises as Inflation Data Fuels Rate Cut Hopes

The Mexican peso strengthened against the dollar on Monday morning. This uptick follows the release of lower-than-expected inflation figures. These numbers have bolstered traders’ expectations for further interest rate cuts by Banxico, Mexico’s central bank.

The spot exchange rate settled at 20.1350 pesos per dollar. This marks a gain of 4.43 cents or 0.22 percent for the peso. The previous official close on Friday, as reported by Banxico, was 20.1793 pesos per dollar.

Throughout the day, the dollar’s price fluctuated between a high of 20.2105 and a low of 20.1106 pesos. The Dollar Index (DXY), which measures the greenback against six major currencies, dipped 0.11% to 105.94 points.

Mexico’s National Consumer Price Index (INPC) rose by 0.44% in November. The National Institute of Statistics and Geography (INEGI) reported a year-on-year inflation rate of 4.55%. Core inflation, which excludes volatile items, stood at 0.05%.

Monex, a financial services firm, noted the peso‘s favorable position. They attributed this to the dollar’s retreat and the local inflation data. These figures reinforce the narrative of a downward trend in inflation.

Mexico’s Monetary Policy

Banxico is set to announce its final monetary policy decision of the year on December 19th. Interest rates, currently at 10.25%, may see another 25 basis point cut.

The central bank has already reduced rates by 100 basis points from 11.25%. This economic scenario reflects a delicate balance between inflation control and economic growth.
