Mexican Peso Holds Ground as Stocks Climb on Holiday-Thinned Liquidity
The Mexican peso traded at 18.67 per dollar Monday morning as traders awaited key U.S. jobs data. Daily volatility narrowed around a 0.12 percent dollar gain, reflecting subdued holiday volumes.
Market makers noted order flows favored modest dollar bids into Asia trading. Mexico’s main stock gauge, the S&P/BMV IPC, closed at 58,865 points Sunday, up 0.27 percent.
Industrial and consumer stocks led gains, while financials and telecoms underperformed. Analysts cited robust corporate earnings and resilient domestic demand as driving factors.
Technically, the peso’s 4-hour chart shows price hugging the 20-period Bollinger Band lower band near 18.65. The 50-period EMA around 18.70 prevents further losses. RSI sits at 52, indicating neutral momentum after a brief oversold dip.
MACD lines flattened just below zero, hinting at a stalled bearish trend. On the daily chart, the peso trades below its 100-day SMA near 18.75, underscoring persistent downward pressure on the dollar. The 200-day SMA at 19.00 remains a major barrier.

The Global Liquidity Index, shown as a yellow line, declined sharply overnight. Reduced global liquidity may tighten cross-border flows and support higher funding costs for emerging markets.
Older data show this index fell 8 percent over the past week, influencing peso stability. Benchmarking peers, the Brazilian real slid 0.35 percent while the Colombian peso lost 0.18 percent.
Mexico’s currency outperformed regional peers amid stronger carry trade appeal. Meanwhile, the Mexican stock index outpaced Brazil’s Bovespa, which fell 0.15 percent, and Chile’s IPSA, up just 0.05 percent.
Top winners in local stocks included Grupo Kuo (+3.6 percent) and Cementos Chihuahua (+2.8 percent). The largest decliners featured Grupo Financiero Banorte (-1.2 percent) and América Móvil (-0.9 percent).

Total trading volume dropped 20 percent compared with the average Monday session. Fundamentals remain mixed. Mexico’s July inflation eased to 3.51 percent, its lowest rate in four years.
Banxico cut interest rates to 7.75 percent last month, citing moderating price pressures. Unemployment ticked up to 2.8 percent in July. Q2 remittances plunged 11 percent year-on-year, weighing on consumer spending.
Global catalyst risk rests on this week’s U.S. labor data. Markets price a 90 percent chance of a Fed rate cut in September. Stronger U.S. payrolls could delay easing and trigger dollar strength.
Conversely, weak employment figures could validate dovish Fed bets, favoring emerging market assets. This thin-liquidity session sets the stage for a decisive pivot once U.S. nonfarm payrolls arrive Friday.
Peso traders and equity investors will watch RSI breaks and moving average crossovers for clues. Until then, both markets remain range-bound but poised for volatility spikes.
This report reflects real-time market data and avoids speculation. It focuses on factual price movements, technical signals, and peer comparisons to reveal the underlying story behind recent Mexican peso and equity trends.
