One of the Yucatán’s great cultural landmarks is edging toward revival. Mexico’s Culture Ministry has signalled a new push to restore the Teatro Peón Contreras, the Mérida theatre shuttered by fire nearly three years ago.

Culture Secretary Claudia Curiel de Icaza said the restoration would enter a new phase once the National Institute of Anthropology and History, the INAH, completes its work, with the venue expected to reopen in about two to three years, under INAH technical supervision.
