Mexican Peso Falls Past 18.40 on Central Bank Minutes

Mexico’s peso has lost value for five weeks. For foreigners earning dollars, life in Mexico got cheaper. For anyone paid in pesos, it got harder.

Key Facts

  • The move The US dollar closed at 18.41 Mexican pesos on Friday 9 October 2026, up 9.0% from 16.89 on Friday 4 September. It is the highest close in our data since 1 April 2026.
  • The trigger On Thursday 8 October, Banxico (Mexico’s central bank) published the minutes of its 24 September meeting. The peso fell about 1.2% that day.
  • The rates Banxico’s policy rate is 6.50%. The US Federal Reserve’s range is 3.75% to 4.00%. The gap is 2.5 points.
  • Your rent A rent of MXN 20,000 costs about US$1,086 at 18.41. At 16.89 it cost about US$1,184, so it is about US$98 a month cheaper in dollars.
  • Prediction markets Polymarket prices no change at Banxico’s November decision at 71.5%, a 0.25-point cut at 20.2% and a rise at 6.0% (US$52,513 traded; bets, not polls). Stand: 12 October 2026, 00:45 ET.

What Happened to the Peso

The peso is Mexico’s currency. On Friday 4 September one US dollar cost 16.89 pesos. On Friday 9 October it cost 18.41, according to RT, a market-data provider. That is 9.0% more pesos for each dollar.

The peso lost ground in each of the last five weeks, Mexican financial press reported. The Friday close of 18.41 is the highest in the series we pulled, which starts on 1 April 2026. Early on Monday 12 October the rate was 18.40.

The speed matters as much as the level. In five weeks the rate moved from below 17 pesos to above 18.4.

Why It Moved

Three things came together, according to analysts quoted by the Mexican press.

First, the US Federal Reserve raised its rate in September to a range of 3.75% to 4.00%. A higher US rate makes dollars more attractive to hold.

Second, Banxico published the minutes of its 24 September meeting on Thursday 8 October. Banxico had held its rate at 6.50% at that meeting, and the minutes showed that three of the five board members left room for future cuts. The peso fell more than 1% on the day, El Cronista and Expansión reported. Gabriela Siller, an analyst at Banco Base, said that a narrower rate gap leads investors to unwind “carry trades” (borrowing in a low-rate currency to hold a high-rate one).

Third, higher US bond yields added pressure, the same reports said. These are explanations from analysts. Nobody can prove which factor mattered most.

What It Means for Your Budget

The effect depends on how you earn. If you work remotely and are paid in dollars, US$1,000 now buys MXN 18,410. On 4 September it bought about MXN 16,890. The same pay stretches further.

If your income is in pesos, nothing improved. Imported goods, travel and anything priced in dollars can cost more in pesos. Many Mexican landlords quote rent in pesos, so check whether your contract names a dollar rate.

A weak peso is not a permanent state, because the peso moves in waves. A calm approach is to avoid moving a large sum on one day.

What Prediction Markets Say

Polymarket prices no change at Banxico’s November decision at 71.5%, a 0.25-point cut at 20.2% and a 0.25-point rise at 6.0% (US$52,513 traded). Kalshi, regulated in the US by the Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC), prices no change at 69%. Stand: 12 October 2026, 00:45 ET.

Why we show this: prediction markets turn real-money bets into a live probability that moves within minutes of the news, which is why investors, campaigns and newsrooms in the United States now follow them closely. We show them next to polls and official results, never instead of them.

What Is Not Known

We do not know whether Banxico will cut in November. The RT calendar lists its next decision for Thursday 5 November at 1 p.m. Mexico City time. Banxico said on 24 September that it expects inflation to reach its 3% target in the fourth quarter of 2027.

The picture has two sides. A weaker peso helps Mexican exporters and dollar earners, and it makes imports and travel abroad more expensive for people paid in pesos. The next US central bank meeting is on 27 and 28 October, and its decision can move the rate again.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why did the Mexican peso fall in early October 2026?

The US dollar cost 18.41 pesos at Friday’s close on 9 October, against 16.89 on 4 September. Mexican financial press linked the slide to the Federal Reserve’s September rate rise, to Banxico’s minutes on 8 October and to higher US bond yields. These are the explanations analysts gave, not a single proven cause.

What interest rate does Banxico pay right now?

Banxico, Mexico’s central bank, held its policy rate at 6.50% on 24 September 2026. The Federal Reserve’s target range is 3.75% to 4.00%, so the gap is 2.5 percentage points at the top of the US range.

When is Banxico’s next rate decision?

The RT economic calendar lists the next decision for Thursday 5 November 2026 at 19:00 UTC, which is 1 p.m. in Mexico City. Prediction markets price no change at about 70%, and that is a bet, not a forecast from Banxico.
