Dubón, 32, left San Pedro Sula at 15, and no other player has won the utility award more than once since it began in 2022. Our news report covers the award itself, and this profile explains who he is.

From San Pedro Sula to Sacramento

Mauricio Dubón, full name Mauricio Andre Dubón, was born on 19 July 1994 in San Pedro Sula, a large city in northern Honduras. On 23 June 2010, at 15, he attended a clinic there run by IMPACT, a Christian mission group that gave baseball gear to poor children.

He told the group’s leader, Andy Ritchey of California, that he wanted to play in the United States. Three days later he moved to Sacramento as a foreign exchange student and lived with Ritchey’s family while attending Capital Christian High School.

The Boston Red Sox, a Major League Baseball club, drafted him in the 26th round of the 2013 draft, 773rd overall. League records show he signed with them on 12 July 2013.

A Long Road to the Big Leagues

In December 2016 Boston traded him to the Milwaukee Brewers in a deal that brought pitcher Tyler Thornburg to the Red Sox. He made his big-league debut on 7 July 2019 as a pinch-hitter, a substitute batter, in Pittsburgh.

Less than a month later, on 31 July 2019, the Brewers traded him to the San Francisco Giants for pitchers Drew Pomeranz and Ray Black. He hit .279 with four home runs in 28 games for the Giants that year.

On 14 May 2022 the Giants traded him to the Houston Astros for catcher Michael Papierski. The Astros won the 2022 World Series, and Major League Baseball lists Dubón as the first Honduran-born player to play in one.

How Mauricio Dubón Won Three Gold Gloves

The utility Gold Glove became an official award in 2022, with one winner in each league every year. That makes ten winners in five seasons, and Dubón is the only one with more than one.

His first came in 2023, when he became the first Astros player ever to win it at the utility spot. The club said he was one of just four big leaguers to play seven positions that season.

In 2025 he played every position except pitcher and catcher, and he won again. Major League Baseball says managers and coaches cast 75% of the vote and the sabermetrics community, which studies baseball through statistics, casts the other 25%.

In 2026 he moved to the National League with the Braves and played 85 games in left field and 62 at shortstop. He also played second base, third base and center field, which made him the first winner from both leagues.

The 2026 Season in Numbers

Mauricio Dubón played 153 games for Atlanta in 2026 and hit .276, which means he got a hit in 27.6% of his official at-bats. He had 158 hits, 12 home runs, 10 stolen bases and 73 runs batted in, which counts runs that scored because of his at-bats.

Across 817 big-league games since 2019 he has a .261 average, 51 home runs and 273 runs batted in. His batting line is modest, which is why the fielding awards stand out.

How He Got to Atlanta

Atlanta acquired Mauricio Dubón from Houston on 19 November 2025 for infielder Nick Allen, according to Major League Baseball’s transaction log. Alex Anthopoulos, the Braves’ president of baseball operations, called him a winning player who fits many positions.

Anthopoulos said at the time that Dubón’s exact role would depend on what the club did over the winter and in spring training. Dubón then played 153 games and won the award.
