Malaysia’s Contentious Cyber Law: Balancing Safety and Free Speech

Malaysia is poised to enforce a new cyber law requiring social media platforms to obtain operating licenses within the country.

Unlike MySejahtera, which demands minimal permissions, this new law requires extensive access rights.

Communications Minister Fahmi Fadzil has criticized platforms like Facebook, TikTok, and Telegram for inconsistent controls against harmful content.

Despite the government’s intentions to cleanse the digital space, many worry about potential misuse.

Given Malaysia’s history with laws like the Sedition Act and the Communications and Multimedia Act, which have controlled online behavior, this concern intensifies.

The proposal has spurred calls for a Social Media Council—a self-regulating body to oversee content moderation without direct government control.
