Key Facts
- —What is happening Malawi, a landlocked country of about 21 million people, borders Mozambique, Tanzania and Zambia and depends on their roads, rails and ports; in August 2026 it handed the chair of southern Africa’s security body to Eswatini.
- —Why it matters Malawi bought US$3.14 billion of goods abroad in 2023 but sold only US$966 million, so freight costs, border rules and neighbours’ policies decide what fuel, fertiliser and food cost at home.
- —The numbers In 2023 South Africa sold Malawi US$489 million of goods and Tanzania US$211 million, while Tanzania bought US$105 million from Malawi; a new power line from Mozambique runs 218 kilometres at 400 kilovolts.
- —Who is who Peter Mutharika leads Malawi, Daniel Chapo leads Mozambique, Hakainde Hichilema was declared Zambia’s election winner on 18 August 2026, and Cyril Ramaphosa of South Africa chairs SADC, the 16-nation Southern African Development Community.
- —What to watch Watch the Mozambique power link, the Nacala port and rail corridor through Malawi to Zambia, the border trade push with Tanzania, and whether talks on the Lake Malawi boundary ever resume.
- —What it means for you Americans can still visit Malawi under a State Department “Exercise Increased Caution” advisory, but the United States announced a partial visa suspension for Malawians from 1 January 2026, and Malawian exports must cross neighbours’ territory to reach the sea.
Landlocked Malawi needs Tanzania, Mozambique and Zambia for ports, power and trade. Here is how each neighbour matters in October 2026.
Malawi neighbours three countries, Mozambique, Tanzania and Zambia, and none of them gives it a coastline. Fuel, fertiliser and soy all cross its borders on someone else’s road, rail or port.
This guide explains each neighbour, the shared lake, the trade numbers and the regional clubs as of October 2026. It also says what changes for American travellers, exporters and investors.
More coverage sits on the Rio Times Malawi page and the Southern Africa page. One currency note: US$1 bought 1,743 Malawi kwacha on 27 October 2026 (open.er-api.com rate, 00:02 UTC).
A Landlocked Country With Three Borders
Malawi is a landlocked country of about 21.1 million people (2023), according to the World Bank, the global development lender. It borders Mozambique, Tanzania and Zambia, and Lake Malawi, which Tanzania calls Lake Nyasa, lies along its eastern side.
The World Bank says dollar shortages, an official-parallel exchange rate gap and high transport costs limit imports and formal exports. Its latest overview, updated in October 2026, expects inflation to ease from 28.4% in 2025 to 23% in 2026.
The International Monetary Fund, the lender of last resort for governments, projects Malawi’s 2026 growth at 2.2% and inflation at 24.4%. For the money side, see the Rio Times forex crisis report and the September inflation report.
Peter Mutharika, who leads the Democratic Progressive Party, Malawi’s governing party, has been president since 4 October 2025. For the full domestic picture, read the Malawi explained guide.
Malawi Neighbours at a Glance
Tanzania lies to the north, and the lake separates the two countries in part. Among the three neighbours it is the only one in Malawi’s top five for both exports and imports in 2023.
Mozambique wraps around Malawi to the south and east, and holds the Indian Ocean port of Nacala. The Nacala corridor links Malawi to the sea by rail and road.
Zambia lies to the west, with Chipata on its side of the border and Mchinji on Malawi’s. Zambia and Mozambique share with Malawi the Nacala corridor, a transport route to the Indian Ocean.

Tanzania, the Northern Neighbour
Malawi and Tanzania met for the third Malawi-Tanzania Investment and Trade Forum in Dar es Salaam from 7 to 9 September 2026. The organisers were TanTrade, Tanzania’s trade promotion agency, and Malawi’s Investment and Trade Centre.
World Bank trade data for 2023 show Tanzania as Malawi’s second-largest export market, at US$105 million or 10.85% of exports. Tanzania also supplied US$211 million of imports, or 6.72%.
Malawi is landlocked, so Tanzania’s northern border and the shared lake are its main links to East Africa. In 2023 Malawi bought about twice as much from Tanzania as it sold there.
Lake Malawi or Lake Nyasa
An 1890 treaty between Britain and Germany put the boundary on the Tanzanian shore, which Malawi reads as giving it the lake. Tanzania argues for a line down the middle, as is common for shared lakes.
Mediation by former southern African presidents, led by Mozambique’s Joaquim Chissano, did not settle the question. The Royal United Services Institute, a London defence think tank, wrote in May 2023 that the last talks were in July 2017.
The same commentary says a 2018 meeting was cancelled at the last minute and the dispute lost urgency. Whether talks have resumed in 2026 is not public.
The 17 August 2026 SADC summit named Chissano to its Panel of Elders, senior former leaders who support mediation. Its communique does not mention the lake dispute.

Mozambique, the Gateway to the Sea
On 14 August 2024 the then presidents, Lazarus Chakwera and Filipe Nyusi, signed trade and energy deals in Maputo. Nyusi said Nacala port had set aside space for Malawi to handle its goods.
Chakwera said using Nacala for fuel should cut the cost of moving fuel overland. Both presidents have since been replaced, and Daniel Chapo now leads Mozambique.
The biggest shared project is the Mozambique-Malawi power line, known as MOMA. It runs 218 km at 400 kilovolts from Matambo in Tete province to Phombeya in Balaka, Malawi.
The World Bank approved support for the line in 2019, with grants from the European Union, Germany’s KfW development bank and Norway. The line is meant to let Malawi import electricity from Mozambique.
This guide could not confirm from an official statement whether the line carries power in October 2026. See What Is Not Known below.
Mozambique also carries a security risk for the region. The SADC summit of 17 August 2026 praised its national dialogue and efforts against terrorism in Cabo Delgado, its far north.
Zambia, the Western Neighbour
Zambia held a general election on Thursday, 13 August 2026. The Electoral Commission of Zambia, the election authority, declared President Hakainde Hichilema the winner on Tuesday, 18 August.
Hichilema won 2,965,326 votes to 1,856,217 for challenger Brian Mundubile, and more than 51% of all votes, so no run-off was needed. Zambia’s president was also elected incoming SADC chair on 17 August 2026.
Zambia will host the 47th SADC summit, putting Malawi’s western neighbour at the head of the regional club. The Nacala Development Corridor runs from Nacala port in Mozambique through Malawi to Chipata in Zambia.
The three governments are developing the corridor jointly. Zambia was not among Malawi’s top five trade partners in 2023, so the corridor is about transit more than today’s volumes.

Trade With the Neighbours and Beyond
Malawi’s trade is lopsided. In 2023 it exported US$966 million and imported US$3.14 billion, so imports were more than three times exports.
Its top export buyers in 2023 were Belgium (15.94%), Tanzania (10.85%), China (5.64%), South Africa (5.35%) and Zimbabwe (5.29%). Its top suppliers were China (17.39%), South Africa (15.56%), the United Arab Emirates (12.38%), India (7.01%) and Tanzania (6.72%).
South Africa, which sold Malawi US$489 million of goods in 2023, is the most important supplier in the region. Mozambique and Zambia do not appear in either top five.
Raw materials made up 62.88% of Malawi’s exports in 2023, World Bank data show. Consumer goods were 48.44% of its imports.
See also the Ghana-owned seed deal and the fuel shortage report. They show how farm inputs and fuel supply tie Malawi to its neighbours.

SADC, COMESA and Who Leads What
Malawi belongs to SADC, which had 16 member states in 2026, and to COMESA, the Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa. COMESA lists 21 members, including Zambia, Madagascar and Zimbabwe.
At the 46th SADC summit in Durban on Monday, 17 August 2026, South Africa’s Cyril Ramaphosa was elected chair. Malawi sent its Second Vice President, Enoch Chihana.
Malawi had chaired SADC’s Organ on Politics, Defence and Security Cooperation, the bloc’s security arm, and Mutharika was commended for it. The summit elected King Mswati III of Eswatini as the new Organ chair.
The summit also approved the SADC Tourism UNIVISA agreement for signature, a single visa idea for the region. It urged members to ratify a Regional Development Fund and to prepare for El Niño-related climate shocks.
Malawi therefore leads on diplomacy and follows on money. It chaired the region’s security body, yet it depends on neighbours’ ports and power, and on dollars it does not earn.
Refugees and Borders
Malawi hosts refugees from the Great Lakes region and the Horn of Africa, mainly at Dzaleka camp near the capital Lilongwe. Current numbers could not be confirmed for this guide.
The UN refugee agency’s data portal showed no readable 2026 count for Malawi on 27 October 2026. Readers should check its Refugee Data Finder for the latest figure.
What It Means for US Readers
The US State Department rates Malawi Level 2, Exercise Increased Caution, for crime and civil unrest (issued 14 May 2026). Check the advisories for Mozambique, Tanzania and Zambia before any cross-border trip.
The US Embassy in Lilongwe announced on 12 January 2026 a partial suspension of visa issuance for Malawians, with limited exceptions. It took effect on 1 January 2026 under Presidential Proclamation 10998, and applicants may still be ineligible for a visa or admission.
For investors, the lesson is that Malawi is a transit economy. Returns on soy, power or logistics depend on Mozambican ports, Tanzanian border posts and Zambian rail, not only on Lilongwe.
Dollar scarcity adds risk for any firm that needs to repatriate profit. Check the World Bank’s warning on the gap between official and parallel exchange rates before committing money.
What Is Not Known
Whether the Malawi-Mozambique power line is carrying power in October 2026 was not confirmed. No Malawian or Mozambican official statement could be read.
The state of the Lake Malawi boundary talks in 2026 is not public in the sources checked. The latest account found is a May 2023 think-tank commentary.
The terms of the Nacala port space promised to Malawi in August 2024 are not known. No trade values between Malawi and Mozambique or Zambia could be confirmed from official statistics.
Current refugee numbers in Malawi could not be confirmed from the UN refugee agency’s portal. Whether AGOA, the US African trade preference law, covers Malawi in 2026 was also not confirmed.
Whether the US visa suspension has changed since January 2026 was not checked beyond the embassy announcement. Zambia’s vote counts come from the election authority’s declaration, and its own website could not be opened.
