Honda Halts Mexico Car Output As Chip Dispute Ripples Through North America

Honda has suspended automobile production at its Celaya, Guanajuato plant after suppliers ran short of standard semiconductors linked to a dispute involving Nexperia, a Netherlands-based chipmaker controlled by Chinese investors.

The stoppage marks the first confirmed case in which tensions over Nexperia have directly idled a major automaker’s line. Honda said it is also adjusting output at certain plants in the United States and Canada while it works to minimize the impact.

A restart date has not been announced. Motorcycle production at another Mexican facility remains unchanged. Celaya is a core hub for Honda’s North American strategy and the global source for the HR-V.

The factory can build roughly 200,000 vehicles a year and produced more than 190,000 last year, far exceeding the approximately 40,000 units sold in Mexico as most output ships to the U.S. market.

North America is Honda’s largest region by volume, with about 1.61 million vehicles sold in 2024, or around 40 percent of the company’s global total. A prolonged slowdown in the region could weigh on earnings in the fiscal year ending March 31, 2026.

Unlike the specialized processors that power artificial intelligence, the parts in short supply are inexpensive “commodity” chips—diodes, transistors, and basic logic components—used across dozens of automotive modules.

Because these components are typically procured on tight schedules and substitutes must be rigorously tested for safety and reliability, even a small disruption can halt assembly lines.

The pause underscores how geopolitical frictions can quickly cascade through industrial supply chains. For consumers, tighter inventories may mean longer wait times and fewer discounts for popular models such as the HR-V.

For Mexican suppliers and workers around Celaya, any extended downtime threatens local income and logistics networks. For Honda and its competitors, the episode highlights the urgency of diversifying sources for even the humblest electronic parts.

What happens next will hinge on two timelines: how fast alternative suppliers can be validated for automotive use, and whether the dispute surrounding Nexperia eases.

Until then, North American dealers, parts distributors, and fleet buyers should expect occasional bumps in availability as manufacturers juggle limited supplies of these everyday but essential chips.
