Key Facts

The arrival. H&M will open its first Argentine store in 2027, ending roughly a decade of on-and-off speculation.

The partner. It enters through Hola Moda, a Panama-based franchise operator that also runs labels such as Carolina Herrera and Michael Kors.

The location. The debut store is planned for the Alto Palermo shopping centre in Buenos Aires.

The map. Argentina becomes one of H&M’s last big Latin American markets; Paraguay opens first, late in 2026.

The politics. Milei’s government has hailed the move as proof its deregulation is drawing global brands back.

The arrival of H&M Argentina has been rumoured for a decade. Now it is official: the Swedish fast-fashion giant will open its first Argentine store in 2027, an early trophy for President Javier Milei’s drive to reopen the economy.

H&M is one of the world’s largest clothing retailers, known for cheap, fast-changing fashion. It has spread across Latin America since opening its first regional store in Mexico in 2012.

Argentina was the conspicuous gap on that map. Years of import controls, currency restrictions and steep tariffs made the country almost unworkable for a volume retailer that ships its stock from abroad.

On 24 April 2026 the company finally confirmed it would enter, opening in 2027 through a local franchise partner rather than on its own.

How H&M Argentina Will Work

H&M is not arriving directly. It has signed a franchise deal with Hola Moda, a Panama-based operator that already distributes international labels such as Carolina Herrera, Valentino and Michael Kors in the region.

Hola Moda will import H&M’s clothing through its distribution hub in Panama, at least at first, and run the local shops. The first is planned for the Alto Palermo shopping centre in Buenos Aires.

Running through a franchise also lowers H&M’s own exposure. The Swedish group lends its brand and supply chain, while the local partner carries the cost of stores, staff and imports. For a retailer that lives on tight margins and fast turnover, that lower-risk route into an unpredictable market is the point.

The model mirrors how other global names — Nike, Zara and Victoria’s Secret among them — already operate in Argentina, through specialised regional partners rather than wholly owned subsidiaries.

Why It Took H&M a Decade

The delay was never about demand. Argentines are enthusiastic consumers of international fashion, and many have long bought H&M while travelling abroad.

The obstacle was the economy. For years, importing goods meant navigating quotas, licences, multiple exchange rates and tariffs that made predictable pricing almost impossible.

Argentina’s previous governments had leaned on those barriers to shield local industry and hoard scarce dollars. The cost was thin choice and high prices; the benefit, they argued, was protecting domestic jobs.

Under Milei, elected in late 2023, much of that has been dismantled. Import rules have loosened, currency controls have eased, and inflation has slowed sharply, giving foreign retailers the stability they need to plan.

A Symbol Milei’s Government Is Happy to Sell

For the government, the announcement is a marketing gift. It presents H&M as visible proof that deregulation attracts investment ordinary Argentines can see and touch.

Federico Sturzenegger, Milei’s minister for deregulation, celebrated the move on X. Once Argentines “see they can buy cheap clothes in their own country,” he argued, reversing the reforms would become “almost impossible.”

That framing turns a single store opening into a political argument: that consumer choice, once widened, is hard to take back.

Part of a Wider Retail Wave

H&M is not alone. Brands from the Japanese-inspired chain Miniso to other global names have announced Argentine plans as the market reopens.

The Swede’s own Latin American footprint keeps growing. From that first Mexican store in 2012, it now trades in more than a dozen countries in the region, with Paraguay due to open late in 2026 and Argentina following in 2027.

That footprint already spans Mexico, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Peru, Uruguay and much of Central America and the Caribbean. Argentina long stood out as the largest economy still missing from the list.

The company has signalled it wants to be in 15 Latin American markets by 2027, and Argentina — a nation of some 46 million people — is among the biggest remaining prizes. Global chains tend to move in herds, and a marquee name like H&M lends cover to smaller brands still weighing the risk.

What It Means for Shoppers and Investors

For shoppers, it promises another affordable, globally styled option in a market long starved of them, and more competition for local clothing chains.

Not everyone is cheering. Argentina’s domestic textile and garment makers, long shielded by import barriers, warn that cheap imported clothing could undercut local production and jobs — the very trade-off at the heart of Milei’s opening.

For investors, it is a confidence signal: a cautious multinational committing to Argentina is a bet that Milei’s opening will outlast the current political cycle.

There are caveats. Because the stock is imported, prices will still hinge on tariffs, the peso and shipping costs, and a franchise entry is far easier to unwind than a factory. Whether H&M becomes a lasting fixture or an early casualty of the next policy swing is the question its 2027 debut will begin to answer.

H&M confirmed in April 2026 that it will open its first Argentine store in 2027, at the Alto Palermo shopping centre in Buenos Aires. Some local reports suggest the timetable could be brought forward.

Who is running H&M in Argentina?

H&M is entering through a franchise deal with Hola Moda, a Panama-based operator that also distributes brands such as Carolina Herrera, Valentino and Michael Kors. Hola Moda will import the clothing and run the stores.

Why is H&M only entering Argentina now?

For years, import controls, currency restrictions and high tariffs made Argentina impractical for a retailer that ships stock from abroad. President Javier Milei’s deregulation and easing of import rules changed that.
