Foxconn to Build World’s Largest Nvidia A.I. Chip Factory in Mexico

Foxconn has announced plans to construct the world’s largest manufacturing facility for Nvidia’s GB200 chips in Mexico. This project marks a significant milestone in the artificial intelligence (AI) chip industry.

Benjamin Ting, senior vice president of Foxconn’s cloud enterprise solutions group, revealed the news during the company’s annual technology event in Taipei.

The GB200 chip is a crucial component of Nvidia’s Blackwell architecture, designed for advanced AI applications. Nvidia began distributing samples of these chips in August 2024 and expects billions in revenue from them in the fourth quarter.

Foxconn executives emphasized the overwhelming demand for the Blackwell platform and GB200 chips. The company already has a substantial presence in Mexico, having invested over $500 million in the state of Chihuahua.

This move aligns with the growing trend of nearshoring production closer to major markets like the United States. Foxconn‘s chairman, Young Liu, assured that the company’s supply chain is well-prepared for the AI era.

He highlighted their advanced manufacturing capabilities, including liquid cooling and heat dissipation technologies essential for managing powerful AI chips.

The global AI chip market is experiencing remarkable growth, with projections reaching $53.5 billion in 2023 and expecting nearly 30% growth in 2024.

Foxconn’s Investment in AI Chip Production

Foxconn’s investment in GB200 production will likely strengthen its position in this expanding market. This initiative is part of a broader industry trend, with many companies investing heavily in AI chip production.

Other major players include AMD, Intel, and Google. Some analysts predict potential chip shortages in the near future due to increasing demand.

Foxconn’s move also reflects the company’s strong financial performance, having recently announced record-breaking revenue for the third quarter of 2024. The robust demand for AI servers drove this success.
