Former Central Bank Chief Campos Neto Joins Nubank as Digital Banking Expands in Latin America

Roberto Campos Neto, who led Brazil’s Central Bank from 2019 to 2024, started his new job at Nubank on July 1, 2025.

Nubank is the largest digital bank in Latin America, and Campos Neto now serves as Vice Chairman and Head of Global Public Policy. He reports directly to Nubank’s CEO, David Vélez.

Nubank’s decision to hire Campos Neto comes as the company grows quickly across Latin America. The company recently received a full banking license in Mexico, which allows it to offer more services to customers there.

In Mexico, four big banks control most payroll accounts, and only about one in three adults has one. Nubank’s new license lets it compete more directly with these banks and offer safer deposit protection.

Nubank’s business is expanding fast. In 2024, the company made $11.5 billion in revenue, up 58% from the year before. Net profit almost doubled to $1.97 billion.

The bank now has over 114 million customers in Brazil, Mexico, and Colombia. Its lending business more than doubled in 2024, and total deposits reached $28.9 billion.

Campos Neto brings strong experience in banking and technology. As Central Bank president, he helped launch Pix, a system that lets Brazilians send money instantly and for free.

He also supported Open Finance, which allows people to share their financial data safely between banks, and promoted Drex, a digital version of Brazil’s currency.

Under his leadership, the Central Bank won “Central Bank of the Year” in 2024, and he received several awards for his work. At Nubank, Campos Neto will help the company expand internationally, work with financial regulators, and plan for the long term.

His background in both public and private banking is expected to help Nubank compete with traditional banks and deal with complex rules.

This move shows how digital banks are changing finance in Latin America. By hiring leaders like Campos Neto, Nubank aims to offer better, more affordable banking to millions of people.
