Federal Police arrest hacker suspected of the largest data leak in Brazil
RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – The man suspected of being responsible for the largest data leak in Brazil was arrested this Friday, March 19th, in Uberlândia, Minas Gerais, during Operation Deepwater, of the Federal Police (PF). The action investigates the obtaining, disclosure and commercialization of data of Brazilians, including several authorities.

The investigations found that, last January, through the Internet, confidential data of individuals and companies – such as the Individual Taxpayer Registry (CPF) and the Corporate Taxpayer Registry (CNPJ), full names and addresses – were illicitly made available.
The information could be acquired through payment in cryptocurrencies. The mega-data leak was revealed by Dfndr Lab, a laboratory specializing in digital security of the startup PSafe.
More than 223 million CPFs were put up for sale on internet forums, along with detailed information such as names, addresses, income, income tax, photos, Bolsa Família beneficiaries and credit scores.
“After several investigations, the Federal Police identified the suspect for the crimes of obtaining, disclosing and selling the data, as well as a second hacker, who would be selling the data through his social networks,” the Federal Police said in a statement. The identity of the arrested man has not yet been revealed.
In total, police officers served five search and seizure warrants and one preventive arrest warrant in the cities of Uberlandia and Petrolina (PE). The court orders were issued by Minister Alexandre de Moraes of the Federal Supreme Court (STF).
