El Mayo and El Chapo’s Son Arrested in Major U.S. Anti-Cartel Operation

On Thursday in the U.S., Ismael Zambada Garcia, known as ‘El Mayo,’ and Joaquín Guzmán López, the progeny of ‘El Chapo,’ were arrested.

Authorities took them into custody when they arrived at a private airport in El Paso, Texas.

This development marks a significant blow to the notorious Sinaloa Cartel, one of Mexico’s largest and most formidable drug trafficking organizations.

El Mayo, a co-founder of the cartel, along with Guzmán López, who ascended to prominence following his father’s lifetime imprisonment in 2019, now face multiple charges in the U.S.

These charges encompass leading deadly operations involving the manufacture and distribution of fentanyl, a drug that claims vast numbers of lives through overdose.

U.S. Attorney General Merrick Garland characterized the Sinaloa Cartel as “one of the world’s most violent and powerful drug trafficking organizations.”

The meticulous capture plan, orchestrated over months by various U.S. federal agencies, involved a strategic deception.

Reports from U.S. media, including The New York Times, suggest that Guzmán López lured El Mayo across the border. They did this under the pretense of visiting real estate properties.

A Tactical Victory in the War on Drug Trafficking

The arrest of Zambada, a 76-year-old who has long evaded the spotlight, fulfills a longstanding pursuit by U.S. authorities.

They had offered a reward of up to $15 million for information leading to his capture. His discreet approach to cartel leadership focuses more on business than violence.

This marks a significant contrast to other cartel operations, which are often marred by brutal territorial wars.

This significant event underscores a persistent U.S. effort. Against a grim backdrop, over 107,000 Americans died from drug overdoses in 2023, with fentanyl involved in about 70% of these deaths.

In addition, the U.S. links most fentanyl production to Chinese precursors, which the Sinaloa Cartel primarily smuggles across the Mexican border.

The U.S. government’s determination is clear. Garland stated, “The fentanyl crisis is the deadliest drug threat our country has faced.

The Justice Department will not rest until it holds every cartel leader, member, and associate accountable. This includes those involved in poisoning our communities.
