Economic Rebound in Chile: Stimulus Success and Emerging Industries

Chile’s economy surged to its fastest quarterly growth since 2021, ignited by a strategic government stimulus

This initiative revitalized domestic demand, previously stifled by the pandemic, reports the Central Bank.

Mining and consumer spending flourished, helped by slowing inflation and lower interest rates, lifting the economy significantly.

For the first quarter, Chile’s GDP rose by 1.9%, nearly reaching the 2% analysts predicted in a Bloomberg survey.

Annually, the economy grew by 2.3%, a strong figure reported by the Central Bank.

This growth spurt follows the government’s revised 2024 forecast to 2.7%, driven by rising copper prices and better-than-expected sector performance.

Additionally, the ongoing monetary easing cycle, nearly a year old, may lead to further rate cuts on May 23.

However, some areas, especially construction and the job market, still face challenges.

President Gabriel Boric identified copper, lithium, and green hydrogen as critical industries driving Chile’s future.

He stressed the economy’s capacity to surpass current projections. In line with this view, the government increased its 2024 copper price forecast to $4.20 per pound.

Early in 2024, domestic demand climbed by 2.1%, recovering from a minor decline the previous quarter.

Mining activities jumped by 6.9%, indicating a robust sector rebound. As a result, Capital Economics upped Chile’s GDP growth forecast from 2.3% to 2.8%.

Kimberley Sperrfechter of Capital Economics remarked on the strong import recovery, showing solid domestic demand.

Yet, she pointed out the ongoing decline in fixed investment, marking its fourth consecutive quarter of contraction.

Housing construction permits hover near historic lows, with unemployment persisting at 8.7%, still over pre-pandemic figures.

Backed by market analysis, the central bank is expected to cut rates by another half point this week.

This would add to a total borrowing cost reduction of 4.75 percentage points since last July.
