Covid-19 ranking: How Brazil compares to other countries in deaths, cases and vaccinations

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – In summary, the country has 2.7% of the world population, has administered 3.7% of the planet’s doses of vaccines against Covid-19, 9.7% of all infections, and 12.6% of all deaths.

Brazil reached the mark of 400,021 victims of the novel coronavirus on Thursday, April 29th, according to data gathered by the media outlet consortium.

How does the country, one of the most affected by the pandemic, compare with other nations? Going straight to the point, Brazil is currently ranked:

• 2nd in number of deaths and 13th in deaths proportional to population;
• 3rd in confirmed cases and 35th in infections in relation to population;
• 5th in vaccines administered and 57th in doses applied per 100 inhabitants

In summary: Brazil has 2.7% of the world’s population, has applied 3.8% of the planet’s Covid-19 vaccine doses, and accounts for 9.7% of all cases and 12.6% of all deaths.

Brazil was, between March 9th and April 25th, the country with the highest daily average of Covid-19 deaths in the world. But on Monday, April 26th, it was overtaken by India, which is suffering from an aggressive second wave.

Brazil reached its peak of deaths on April 12th this year, with an average of more than 3,100 victims per day. This has only been surpassed so far by the United States (3,400 in January). India’s current average is 2,600.

Brazil had already been the world leader in deaths between June and July last year, but at the time the average number of victims was less than 1,100 per day (about 1/3 of the current peak).

In number of deaths proportional to population, Brazil is the 13th-most-affected country in the world (1,858 deaths per 1 million inhabitants). The world average is 402.

It is the nation with the most Covid-19 victims per million inhabitants in the Americas and is only behind European countries in the world ranking. In the daily average of deaths in relation to the population, Brazil is currently the 8th worst (with 11.44 new deaths per 1 million inhabitants). The world average is 1.66.

In this ranking, Brazil is only behind Hungary (20), Uruguay (17), Bosnia and Herzegovina (17), North Macedonia (15), Bulgaria (13), Paraguay (12), and Poland (11.94).

Confirmed cases

Brazil is the country with the third-most confirmed cases, and ranks 35th in the number of infected people proportional to the population. The country has only 2.7% of the world’s population and 9.7% of all those infected with the novel coronavirus.

Brazil currently has the second-worst daily average of new Covid-19 cases in the world (56,000), almost tied with the U.S. (53,000). India, which broke the world record of infected people in 7 of the last 8 days, now leads the ranking, with a daily average of 340,000 new cases.

Brazil is 35th in the ranking in number of confirmed cases per 1 million inhabitants. It is in better shape than the U.S. (9th), France (17th) and Switzerland (24th), but with worse numbers than Italy (36th), the UK (37th) and Argentina (38th).

In the daily average of confirmed cases per 1 million inhabitants, Brazil is still ahead of India, which is the second-most populous country in the world, with more than 1.3 billion people.

The sixth-most populous country in the world, with 212 million inhabitants, Brazil has an average of 267 new cases per million inhabitants, a number similar to Hungary’s (264). India has 246. Cyprus (929), Uruguay (854), Bahrain (620), Turkey (552), and Sweden (515) lead this ranking. Among the countries better than Brazil are Italy (213), USA (162), and Cuba (96).

The world average is 105 new cases per 1 million inhabitants.

Vaccines administered

Brazil has administered more Covid-19 vaccines than all countries, but is only 58th in number of doses administered in relation to the population. The country has 2.7% of the world’s population and accounts for 3.8% of all vaccines administered so far.

Brazil registers the 4th highest average number of doses administered per day (908,000), behind only China (5.29 million), the U.S. (2.72 million) and India (2.36 million).

European nations and Mexico complete the top 10: UK (512 thousand), Germany (491 thousand), France (357 thousand), Italy (355 thousand), Spain (305 thousand) and Mexico (302 thousand).

The country’s best immunization rate was reached on April 13th (1.14 million doses applied per day), but there was a sharp drop afterwards due to the lack of immunizers in several cities.

With problems in the delivery and distribution of doses, vaccination in Brazil fell to only 336,000 on April 21st, when it was overtaken by Germany, the UK, Mexico and France. But immunization against Covid-19 has gained traction again since then and Brazil has regained 4th place.

In the ranking in number of doses administered per 100 inhabitants, Brazil ranks 57th.

It is behind almost all European countries and also behind Mongolia (31st), Turkey (48th), Saudi Arabia (51st), and Morocco (52nd), among others, in vaccination proportional to population size.

But it is just ahead of China (59th) and Argentina (60th) and, with 18 doses administered per 100 inhabitants, it is well ahead of the world average (13) and Mexico (12), Russia (12), and India (10).
