Controversy Erupts Over Namibia’s Plan to Cull Elephants for Food

Namibia faces its worst drought in a century, threatening both people and wildlife. Nearly half of the country’s 2.5 million people suffer from acute food insecurity.

In response, the government plans to cull 723 wild animals, including 83 elephants, to provide meat to struggling communities. This decision aims to alleviate human-wildlife conflicts and manage limited resources.

The culling targets animals in national parks and communal areas, where officials believe wildlife numbers exceed available grazing and water supplies.

The plan includes killing 21 elephants in areas where desert elephants roam. Professional hunters will carry out the cull, which has already yielded over 56,800 kilograms of meat from 157 animals.

The Namibian Ministry of Environment, Forestry, and Tourism defends the cull as necessary for resource management and drought relief.

However, the plan has sparked debate. Critics argue it lacks scientific backing and threatens Namibia‘s unique desert-adapted elephants.

These elephants, one of only two such populations in Africa, have declined due to drought and human activities. Conservationists warn that even a small reduction in their numbers could jeopardize their survival.
