The Struggle for Forest Conservation in the Americas

In the ongoing battle for forest conservation, Brazil and Colombia have emerged as beacons of progress in Latin America.

Since 2015, Brazil has slashed its rate of primary forest loss by one-third, effectively lowering its contribution to global forest loss from 43% to 30%.

Similarly, Colombia achieved a 50% reduction in forest loss during 2023, a testament to the proactive environmental policies of Presidents Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva and Gustavo Petro.

The shift in political focus from a niche interest to a priority mirrors the increasing recognition of environmental stewardship’s importance.

Yet, challenges persist, notably in Bolivia and Nicaragua, where deforestation rates have surged due to agricultural expansion and monoculture practices.

Brazil has actively pursued conservation, designating over three million hectares as protected areas and enhancing oversight to curb illegal deforestation.

Despite these efforts, it remains at the forefront of primary forest loss, spotlighting the ongoing need for innovative conservation strategies.

Colombia’s forest success stems from a holistic approach, combining enhanced community governance, sustainable management, and peace policies.

These measures have collectively contributed to the nation’s conservation successes.

Decrease in the loss of tropical primary forests in 2023

A 9% drop in 2023’s forest loss shows progress, but ongoing deforestation stresses the challenge of achieving the 2030 Glasgow goals.

Forests, vital for mitigating climate change, supporting economies, and safeguarding biodiversity, demand focused protection efforts.

The forthcoming COP 16 and COP 30 conferences, hosted by Colombia and Brazil respectively, present opportunities to align and propel conservation and restoration initiatives.

Bolivia’s deforestation, fueled by pro-agriculture policies, demands urgent, stricter regulations and policy overhauls.

The contrasts in the Americas highlight the need for persistent political will, strategic actions, and cooperation to protect forests.
