Colombian Stocks Stuck in Limbo as Violence, Fiscal Stress, and Uncertainty Weigh on Market

The COLCAP index closed at 1,647.78 on June 23, 2025, slipping 0.16% in a session that typifies the market’s recent stagnation.

Official trading data and analysis from TradingView confirm that prices have hovered for weeks around the 50-day moving average, with no clear trend emerging on either the 4-hour or daily charts.

Tight Bollinger Bands and a neutral RSI near 51 on both timeframes signal a lack of momentum and direction, while the MACD indicator sits flat, reflecting indecision. Volumes remain moderate, underscoring the market’s wait-and-see mood.

This technical stalemate mirrors Colombia’s deepening crisis. The country faces a surge in violence, a broken fiscal regime, and rising political instability, as detailed by official humanitarian and government sources.

The attempted assassination of presidential candidate Miguel Uribe Turbay on June 7, 2025, marked a return to the political violence of past decades.

Armed groups have expanded their reach, fueling a humanitarian disaster with over 135,000 people displaced in the first two months of 2025 alone. The United Nations now estimates that 9.1 million Colombians require humanitarian aid.

Fiscal discipline has collapsed. The government suspended its fiscal rule in June, allowing the deficit to balloon to 7.1% of GDP, the highest since the pandemic.

Colombia’s Market Stalls Amid Fiscal Strain and Political Uncertainty

Public debt has surged to $203.3 billion, or 48.1% of GDP. After Congress blocked a new tax reform, the Ministry of Finance slashed the budget by 12 trillion pesos. Credit agencies have warned of possible downgrades if fiscal order is not restored.

Political instability compounds these problems. President Gustavo Petro’s “Total Peace” initiative has failed to curb violence, and his government faces a 64% disapproval rating.

Frequent cabinet changes and legislative gridlock have stalled reforms, while Colombia’s pivot toward China and away from the United States introduces new risks for trade and investment.

The market’s top winners in the last session included Ecopetrol and Cementos Argos, both buoyed by sector-specific tailwinds. Ecopetrol advanced as energy remained a rare bright spot, while Cementos Argos benefited from modest construction demand.

On the losing side, Bolsa de Valores de Colombia and Grupo Nutresa led declines, with Nutresa hit by sector rotation and persistent consumer weakness. Compared to regional peers, Colombia’s equities have underperformed.

While Brazil and Chile saw more decisive gains, Colombia’s market drifted sideways. The charts show the COLCAP index clinging to long-term support, but with no conviction from buyers or sellers.

Colombia’s stock market remains stuck, reflecting a country in “intensive care.” Until security, fiscal credibility, and political stability return, investors see little reason to commit, and the market is likely to remain adrift.
