Colombian Shares Hold Near Highs as Select Stocks Surge, Others Slide
Data from the official Colombian stock exchange and referenced trading charts show the MSCI COLCAP Index closed at 1,701.62 late on July 16, 2025.
The index posted a modest gain of 0.13% during local trading hours, maintaining its position near annual highs. Most trading took place between 1,699.41 and 1,704.09 points, reflecting little volatility intraday.
Market participants concentrated their activity in financial and industrial names. Grupo Cibest SA rose 1.96% to 52,000 pesos, recording the day’s best large-cap performance.
Banco de Bogotá followed, gaining 1.58% and reaching 32,200 pesos, while Bancolombia’s preferred stock added 1.48% to close at 45,140 pesos.
These advances signaled ongoing investor demand for financial sector exposure as domestic macroeconomic stability persists. The day’s largest losers included Cementos Argos SA, which fell 8.71% to 9,750 pesos after disappointing quarterly earnings.

Canacol Energy Ltd lost 4.62% to close at 6,600 pesos, pressured by weak oil prices, while Grupo de Inversiones Suramericana dropped 4.16% to 52,500 pesos on soft investment returns.
Colombia’s COLCAP Extends Outperformance Amid Lower Inflation
Trading volume matched the month’s average, but continued to show a bias toward the benchmark’s top constituents. Compared with regional peers, the COLCAP continued to outperform Brazil’s Bovespa, which moved sideways during the session, and Mexico’s IPC, which finished flat.
Traders attributed the difference to lower inflation in Colombia (4.82% in June), which continued to encourage inflows, and to the COLCAP’s attractive average dividend yield of 6.73%.
Technical analysis of the daily chart supports the bullish trend. The index traded above its short- and long-term moving averages, with the 200-session moving average sloping upward to reinforce support.
The Relative Strength Index (RSI) came in at 63.08, pointing to moderate overbought conditions but not giving a reversal signal. The Moving Average Convergence Divergence (MACD) indicator remained strongly positive, with the main line staying above the signal line by a clear margin.
This extended a multi-week uptrend. Bollinger Bands showed prices hugging the upper band, suggesting momentum could soon slow or consolidate.
The index closed above key resistance established by previous highs near 1,700 points, making future movement above this level a notable risk factor for possible profit-taking.
Volume analysis confirmed the move, as trading intensity held steady while prices advanced. Regional and global backdrops also influenced prices, with commodity and U.S. index strength supporting the local narrative.
However, domestic concerns, such as sector-specific earning disappointments and commodity price shifts, showed investors continue to weigh specific risks regardless of resilient macroeconomic data.
In summary, the Colombian equity market sustained its edge over regional competitors, assisted by lower inflation, consistent earnings in key companies, and supportive technical factors.
Local financial institutions drew buying interest while selective earning pressures drove the biggest losses, providing a nuanced market snapshot shaped by both local and global developments.
