Mexican Stocks Show Caution as Tariffs and Global Volatility Weigh
Official exchange figures and chart data from July 16, 2025, reveal Mexican equities traded sideways, reflecting investor hesitance amid continued tariffs risk and muted global volumes.
The S&P/BMV IPC closed at 56,503.04, barely changed from the prior day. Markets in Mexico felt pressure from trade tensions, as U.S. tariff threats lingered and moved business sentiment to a risk-off stance.
Analysts noted that the trading day did not generate strong inflows into equity ETFs. Money remained parked in fixed income funds, highlighting local investors’ preference for safety amid uncertain policy signals.
Trading volumes in equities did not spike, supporting a picture of limited conviction in either direction. The day’s technical analysis points to a market in consolidation.
The one-day chart showed the index holding just above 56,500. Both the 50-day and 100-day moving averages acted as resistance, with price action capped well below recent highs near 57,100.

On a 4-hour timeframe, moving averages sloped downward, showing the short-term downtrend remained intact. Relative Strength Index readings on both daily and 4-hour charts stayed in the low 40s, indicating weak momentum.
Mexico’s IPC Consolidates Near Key Levels
The market approached, but did not breach, classical oversold territory. The MACD on both timeframes remained negative, with histogram bars shrinking, pointing to a loss of bearish drive but not yet suggesting a reversal.
Bollinger Bands on the 4-hour chart narrowed, highlighting reduced volatility as the market waited for a clear trigger. Support at 56,462 held firm, while the next level sits at 56,447.
Resistance proved resilient above the 56,900 mark. Without increased volume, attempts to break through these levels failed. No technical sign pointed to a trend reversal during this session.
The top winner, Genomma Lab Internacional, rose 3.36% as consumer defensives remained sought after in uncertain times. Megacable Holdings and Industrias Peñoles followed with 1.91% and 1.61% gains, thanks to isolated demand in communications and mining.
On the losing side, Becle S.A., the parent of Jose Cuervo, lost 4.17%, pressured by margin concerns and soft sales. Bolsa Mexicana de Valores dropped 3.38%, reflecting lower trading commissions and weaker sector sentiment.
Comparing Mexico’s IPC to global peers, U.S. indices posted small gains, while Asian and European markets delivered mixed performance.
The IPC lagged its emerging market counterparts, which found more direction from positive earnings or stable policy statements. The peso closed stronger against the dollar as traders expected ongoing government negotiations regarding tariffs.
Hard data sets the tone. Cautious trading, sector-specific moves, and unresolved policy risks defined the session. The technical indicators, trading activity, and volumes confirm a market stuck in consolidation, waiting for sharper news to move in either direction.
The day closed with more questions than answers, leaving business participants alert for further developments.
