Chilean Stocks Dip Despite Record Pension Flows as Global Rally Pauses
Trading data from TradingView and Trading Economics reveal Chilean equities faced mixed signals on May 27, 2025, as institutional support clashed with global market uncertainty.
The S&P IPSA Index closed at 8,366.00 points, declining 14.500 points or 0.17% during Tuesday’s session. The broader IGPA index reached 42,120.65 points, maintaining its remarkable 25.05% year-to-date advance despite recent volatility.
Technical analysis of the daily chart shows the IPSA trading within a well-defined upward channel. The index holds above key moving averages, with the 50-period simple moving average providing support around 8,069 points.
The Relative Strength Index sits at 65, indicating positive momentum without reaching overbought territory. Bollinger Bands display compressed volatility near current levels, suggesting potential for directional movement.
The MACD indicator maintains bullish crossover signals with positive histogram values confirming upward bias remains intact. Volume patterns show decent participation during the decline, though not excessive selling pressure.

The index trades approximately 126 points below its May 15 peak of 8,492.60 points, representing a modest 1.5% pullback from recent highs. Pension funds drove significant institutional activity with record April inflows totaling $334.7 million.
This marks the highest monthly investment since December 2023. These flows increased pension fund equity allocation from 7.6% to 7.9% of total assets under management.
Banco de Chile attracted the largest pension fund investment at $105.9 million, followed by LATAM Airlines with $71.9 million and Cencosud receiving $33.0 million. Conversely, funds reduced positions in Entel, Engie Chile, and SQM with outflows of $9.2 million, $7.4 million, and $3.3 million respectively.
Chilean mutual funds reversed recent positive trends, posting $6.7 million in outflows despite maintaining 2.6% equity exposure. These funds favored Enel Chile, LATAM Airlines, and Falabella Chile while reducing holdings in CMPC, Vapores, and Banco de Chile.
Global markets provided mixed backdrop as US indices rallied on delayed EU tariff implementation. The S&P 500 gained 2.0% while Asian markets followed with moderate advances, though emerging market currencies weakened against the strengthening dollar.
Chile’s economic fundamentals show mixed signals with GDP growth at 2.3% year-over-year, below consensus expectations of 2.0%. Inflation declined to 4.50% from 4.90% while unemployment remained steady at 8.70%. The central bank maintained interest rates at 5.00%.
The IGPA reached an all-time high of 42,424.96 earlier in May, with Trading Economics forecasting the index at 41,509.81 points by quarter-end. Current momentum suggests the market remains in bullish territory despite short-term consolidation.
Chilean equities continue outperforming regional peers, supported by strong institutional flows and improving corporate fundamentals. However, global trade uncertainties and currency pressures create headwinds for sustained momentum in coming sessions.
